You can get higher wattage (read ILLEGAL) H4s on ebay on the cheap (less than $20) I'm not sure how your state is, but if the cops are lax about that thing, go ahead, if they're not, it's only a fix-it ticket, and you're out $20... either way, it's not that much. I'd hate to go HID, and get a fix it ticket.... OUCH!
I hear ya about the HID's because that would suck. Btw, which H4 bulb were you thinking of? I think the standard H4 is rated at 1000 lumens and even the UHF is still less than 1200. There is a 80 watt bulb that I think produces close to 1800 lumens but that would mean rewiring with a thicker guage and I believe it's not recommended for head lights with a plastic enclosure.
Yeah, I was refering to the 80/100 (lo/hi) I usually don't rewire the wire guage is sufficuent for the amperage, I use a relay, so I can still use the stock switch on the stalk without having the higher amperage running into the cabin. I still use stock harnesses for the bulb. 110w=9.26 amps at the switch in stock config, by running 2 relays, you can seperate the headlights into individual circuits, and thus you have only 6.66 amps per curcuit. the switch curcuit will have close to no resistance, so thus next to no amp draw. Running this config is actually safer as wiring is concerned. when it comes to over heating the housing, if you can run HID, you can run a 80w halogen bulbs

Don't bother with the HIDs, heard it through the grape vine that the government is going to outlaw HIDs because they are too bright plus with all the thefts of HID lights it's only a matter of time before the OEs are going to retrofit standard light to vehicles that had HIDs from the factory. The insurance industy is having fits over the massive loss involved in replacement of such an easily stolen part. Stick with the silverstars they are plenty bright, legal and cheap at 37 bucks a pair at wallyworld.

Wallyworld?!?! Wal-Mart carries Silverstars now? Cool. I had to buy mine from a premium-priced autoparts store.

fireballfish-

Thanks for the info So wouldn't the H4 be about the same as the HIR2 since they both put out about 1800 lumens? Oh and did you notice a significant difference when you changed the bulbs?

I always thought that HID's ran a lot cooler than halogens because more of the energy is converted to light so it produces less heat.

Thanks again.

Or you can save some money and get them on Ebay for about $20 a pair. Even with shipping it would come out to around $26.

Usually headlights burn out due to improper handling. I use powderless exam gloves when installing mine, and I am VERY careful not to get anything on the bulb. Oils and such will heatup on the glass, and cause premature failure. Either way, is once a year really too often not to change them?

yeah they only last 50% of OEM bulbs because they run hotter i have no propblem buying headlamps every year or so. it also depends on the OEM headlamp..the silverstars that were in my focus sucked ___. they only lasted 6 months because moisture kept genning into the headlights after it rained. so far in the scion since march, no problems :D

I just purchased a set of Silverstars for my Z. I love the look of them. Unfortunately for me, changing the bulbs requires removing my bumper .

MTEC or Nokya's are awesome.

I own both sets for my tC, and I currently have the Nokya's in. They are really bright and give off a blue beam.

MTEC and Nokya's are to be the closest Xenon/HID Blubs as to a factory BMW, Lexus, etc (newer models)

www.autospeedy.com is where I ordered my blubs

I've decided against HID's (unless someone makes a projector kit for the tC) and ordered a pair of HIR2 infrared halogen bulbs. Has anyone used or heard of these? Hopefully they are brighter than the standard halogen bulbs.

Thanks
According to http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...ulb_types.html

9012/HIR2 puts out 1870 lumens using the same amount of wattage (55w) as the 9006(1000 lumens). While it's not going to put out as much lumens as a HID D2S or D2R bulb (3200/2800 lumens), you should still see a noticeable difference versus the stock 9006 bulbs. I've ordered mine but they haven't arrived yet. Hell if it's just as good as (or better than) my E-Code H4/H1 conversion on my old Mazda running overwattage bulbs (Philips Rallye 90/130w H4s(1820/3550 lumens), 100w H1s (2600 lumens)) and a heavy duty wiring harness, I'll be happy! :D

Remember, it's all about lumens!

Bingo. HIR bulbs are the brightest out there. They are expensive though.

From HIDforum:

For the 55W marked segment, sorted in order of brightness:
+50%: Philips Vision Plus (achieves its extra performance by increased luminance, not lumens.
+30%: Philips Premium, Osram Silverstar (European marked only - see note below)
+20%: Osram/Sylvania Xtra Vision, Osram/Sylvania Silverstar (North american market only - see note below)
+0%: Philips Bluevison, Osram/Sylvania Cool Blue, Osram/Sylvania Halogen Plus, and OEM bulbs like GE.
-10%: PIAA Superwite

If you're referring to your Nissan 350Z, you don't need to take the bumper off to change the headlights bro. Jack it up, take the front wheels off and undo the push pin screws in the fenderwell and the headlights are right there. Trust me, I've done it to my old one more than once.

I believe that HIR bulbs are only made for 9005/9006 right now because those have separate high and low beams. I don't know if it would work for high/low beam. I think I'm going to buy the Philips Vision Plus 50 xenon bulbs and try them. I've heard that they're much brighter than the Sylvania Silverstars (not the Osram Silverstars). I don't really care about having blue/white/purple light, just being able to see the road, so I'll give this a try. Maybe I'll put Silverstars or PIAA Yellow Ion 9006 lights into my fog lights and give that a try as well.

Yeah, I think you're right. I couldn't find HIRs anywhere for H4. So I got the Osram 50+ Silverstars off of ebay. They are a bit brighter and whiter to the trained eye. I think the biggest advantage is that they throw light further down the road. I was worried people would be flashing me their brights because they thought I had mine on, but no problems. I decided on them over the Vision Plus because of this website's test: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk.

Go to product tests and then "Bulbs - Plus 50 per cent". You might have to register, but its no biggie. They compared the two bulbs there and said the Osrams were a little better. But of course now, GE has some bulbs that are supposed to be +60. Meh. I just can't get ahead.
