My 2005 xB temperature control **** will not stay in the hot position when I turn it. Is there a spring or cable in the dash that could be broken?

 

my wifes 06 XA does the same thing.
When you turn the **** all the way to the right, it goes back a little bit and stops halfway down the red/hot area.
I noticed the other night, after driving a while and the car was fully warmed up, I was able to turn the **** to the right, and it stayed this time.
I'll have more time later in the week to go over a few issues with the car, and will see what's causing this. I have to remove the AC/Heater control panel anyway, as a light went out.
