Default Component Systems Not Working. Help Needed.

this is truly strange. i was driving on the highway last night and had the music turned way up, when all of a sudden the tweeters on my component systems stopped working. the mids are working just fine, but for some reason, the tweeters are dead.

i actually have 2 sets of phoenix gold component systems (one for the front and one for the rear of my xa) hooked up to a 4 channel pioneer amp. all 4 four tweeters are not sounding. any ideas? :?

first test your wiring..hook another speaker up to it to see if drivers are bad or wiring is bad before you tear things up....then of course check all your wiring if speakers are bad.... you did chokes/crossovers?

well i've had this set up for close to a year now. the only change is a new headunit but the wiring is exactly the same. i'll test another speaker to see what happens.

i don't understand what you mean about the chokes/crossovers though.

did run your crossovers to cut off frequency range? I asked in just in case...you ran them full range they may have blown...lol people do some crazy things out there

To me it sounds like it's either in the H/U or the amp. I'm leaning more toward the H/U. I would check the crossover and the amp for a burnt electrical smell just to be safe. How long were you playing the music when this happened? something may have gotten hot and went into protect mode.

i ran the crossovers and everything was hooked up fine. i don't think that's what caused it but i'll have to test it.

i was listening to the music for about 1/2 an hour at that volume. my first thought was protect mode, but it doesn't explain why the mids are still working.

i'm planning on pulling the headunit and connecting it to my friends 06 xa to see what happens. i figure if his speakers don't work, i've found the problem.

Are you sure the crossover doesn't have a protect on it? It may have it for the tweets ands mids separate. Just a thought. It's been a minute since I look at any PG stuff.

honestly, i'm not sure. this has been bugging me since last night. i can usually trouble shoot a problem but this is completely bugging me. i'm gonna duck out of work a little early so i can have some light when i start looking at everything. i'm gonna hook up one channel of the components to my sub amp and see if it works. if it does, then the amp is the problem. if that's not it, i'll check the crossovers and pull the door panels to see what's going on in there. then i'll check the headunit by hooking it up to my buddies xa. of course i'll do all this after i check my connections and all the other little things that might be causing this.

If the mids are working, don't waste your time taking the head unit out. You wouldn't hear anything if there was a problem with the head unit.

Since the mids are working you have one of three possibilities: 1. In the crossover there is fuse to prevent damage to the tweeter to due a high current situation and it's blown, 2. a component in the crossover burned out, or 3. you blew the tweeters.

Pray for number 1. Since all the tweeters went out at approximately the same time I suspect it is a fuse. The easiest thing to check is to pop the cover off the crossover and look for a fuse.

The easiest way to start testing if you don't find a fuse is to find another speaker and hook it up to the tweeter output of one of the crossovers. If you have sound, you blew your tweeters. If you don't have sound it's something in the crossover.

I think that sums it up. I assume that the mids and tweeters are fed by the same speaker output from the amp or headunit. If the mids work and the tweets do not then the signal is getting to the mids but not to the tweets from the same source...the source is fine...the problem must be within the crossovers, the wiring from the crossovers to the tweets, or in the tweets themselves.

thanks for the help guys. i'm hoping it's something cheap to fix. having to buy 2 new sets of components right now would suck. looking on the bright side though, it's the perfect chance to upgrade to some ed or jl components.

If it does happen to be the tweeters you can always buy something to replace them until you can afford new sets.

WOW! You must have been jammin! You could always try the Rockford component set they sell in Best Buy. They can handle alot. I picked up a set of Infinity Reference series 6.5's last week and they sounded great in the display.

I would get some baffles for the mids if you don't have some already. They will greatly inprove SQ and might help save them from blowing.

Are you sure you want cheap componnts?? They aren't so cheap if you have to replace them all the time for failure.../shrug.
