i should have said inexpensive, not cheap. i thought the pg stuff would have been better than it was. sounded really great, they just burned out way too quick. i guess i need something a little tougher, but i'm just not in a position right now to go all out. besides, since my amp is only shooting 70rms, i don't need something ridiculous. suggestions?

What kind of budget? Do you want to replace just the front for now or front and rear. My suggestion is just the front so you can afford a nicer set and that's where most of your sound is anyway.

The PGs may not have been the problem. Considering the length of time and the level you said you were playing them my first thought would be that the amp was clipping enough to overheat the speakers but not enough for you to hear. The other possibility is an inadequate speaker design that didn't provide enough cooling.

well, i don't really have a budget. something in the neighborhood of $250.00 for both is what i'd like to spend, but i wouldn't mind spending more if the quality was worth it.

and chad, i always thought a clipping amp was very noticable? no sound is kind of a big sign if you know what i mean. what would cause it to clip? if that may have been a factor, i'd like to correct it to keep this from happening again.

Check out some JL Audio http://www.jlaudio.com/ I have been very happy with all 3 of my last 3 systems based around JL's stuff. The first system was JL subs, Phoenix Gold Route 66, 6 channel amp, and MB Quart Compnents front and 6.5 coax rear, This system metered 150DB at one meet never gave a like of trouble. I have 2 JL systems now. Both are basically identical except for different Kenwood HU's. I am using a 300/4 JL amp running VR/CSI series JL component front set and VR/CXI series JL 6.5 Coaxials for rear fill. For the bass there is a 250/1 JL amp feeding dual voice coil JL 10W3 subs (1 in the Corvair and 2 in my box). They sound great and hold up well. The amps have nice flexibilty and include good crossover and sound adjustments at the amp.

I have recently purchased the system for my xB and found good prices and service at http://www.sonicelectronix.com/. Good luck

The Elemental Designs eDi 6500s is $250 a set not including any discounts you might be able to get. I've never heard a set but I've seen very good comments about them. Then you could get a cheaper set for the rear. The 6000s v.2 is only $135 a set which would be very close to your amount for 2 sets.

It depends on how much clipping is occuring. Clipping is just when the the peaks of an alternating signal are "clipped" because the amplifier circuit isn't capable of reaching the desired output. Basically the amp goes as high as it can and flat lines there until the signal wave comes back down to limits it can handle. If you are only clipping a little, your ears may not hear the flat spot plus the inertia of the speaker cone may finish part of the wave and the spider and surround will pull it back.

One other thing I noticed rereading the thread is that you have speaker baffles. If you are using the small ones that cover just behind the speaker, like the picture below, they may be the culprit by not provding enough air volume to dissipate the heat.

I've only heard one system with JL comps and I didn't like them. The tweeters were very harsh. I'm not trying to knock JL. They make great stuff. I'm just giving my experience.

You could go Alpine. Never heard a set of Alpines I didn't like. I had Audio Bahns in my Altima and they were great. Just a few random thoughts.

If you want to get crazy, build your own set. The comps in my car consist of a set of MB Quart crossovers, Dayton Audio 7" aluminum mids, and Vifa 1" aluminum dome tweeters. The crossover isn't perfect for the speakers but it's close enough since I already had them. Between the mids and tweets I think it was right around $140ish. I can't say enough about the tweets. I've never heard a more vibrant full sounding set.

not so sure i want to go through all the trouble. i'm more of a "don't mess with it" type of guy. buy what you want and avoid headaches. thanks for the suggestions.

i spoke with a friend of mine and he's telling me he has a hook up on infinity components so i'm gonna check that out. one of my buddies also works at best buy so i plan to swing through to see what they have to offer, if anything at all.

Yeah I have a friend at Best Buy to and you need to go check out the Infinity stuff there cause they get a MAJOR deal on stuff there. ;) The only thing I didn't like about the Reference series is the Silk Dome Tweeters. But the sound quality is amazing.

Hmmm I don't feel that at all. I was not specific enough in my description of which JL speakers I have and like, they are the VR series CSI (components) and CXI (Coaxials). JL has 4 different lines of speakers like this. This series VR uses a silk dome tweeter for very clean effortless highs...I wonder if the ones you heard were their ZR series with the aluminum tweets...I have never liked any aluminum tweets I have heard, those always sound harsh to me.
