Default Cruise Control?

I tried a search for this but found nada. My wife and I make occasional trips from LA to San Fran which is a much sweeter ride with cruise control. Has anyone installed cruise control? I saw one at tdrsparks for $200.

thanks!

There have been a few people that have done this. rostra.com has a kit that is most popular and if you are semi-skilled its a good DIY project., also most car dealers use this model for the xb. Hope this helps.

The cruise control was an option when I purchased. You may be able to pick up this kit direct from Rostra for cheaper. I just wish the control arm could have been installed on the right side of the wheel is all.

Default Cruise Control

I got a quote from Brandon Distributors http://www.brandondist.com/ for $183.20. This is for the Rostra Cruise Control DIY.

I think cruise control is only available as an option in the gulf states.

Rostra kit is very easy and is the same as the dealer installed units that I have seen. It is a very good unit also. I installed the unit in less than 2 hours. If you have an 06 the pin locations on the ecu have changed. The wire colors were the same as I recall. If the directions don't match year model a call to Rostra will solve the problem.

So...wait. Cruise control is an option on the '06 xB? That would be a big knock against it since that's one of the main things I wanted in my next car.

EDIT: I went to the Scion site and found no option listed for cruise control...where is it?

Talk to the dealership you want to buy it from. They didn't charge me for install cost. I paid $185 for it with delivery.

Cruise is not a "factory" option, meaning Toyota doesn't make a cruise control system for the xB. Howver, most Scion dealers offer an aftermarket cruise control unit from Rostra. It is not a Toyota product, however, my dealer would warrnty the product and not void any warranties on the vehicle.

Mine works pretty well. It's not quicte as quick to react as a factory cruise control, but nonetheless, it gets the job done.

I think it is a regional option. If you go to the Scion website and build your own, it will give you different options for different zip-codes. For example, if you put in a Florida zip code you can choose chrome trim packages and leather interior.
I live in Texas and "speed control" was listed as an option when I was pricing my car online. So I got it! Very glad I did.

Y'all don't know how lucky you are on this subject. Here in the DC metro area, I am the only dealership I know of that offers dealer installed cruise control. Most dealerships will tell you they are not available at all and some will even lie and tell you it will void your warranty. I do offer it here, but its expensive as hell. Since its not a genuine Toyota part, I have to have an outside company install it. The cheapest I have found charges me (as a dealer) $569. No, that's not a misprint. I sell them without markup. Its the only accessory I sell without a built-in profit and I do it because I can't believe how much it costs.

As expensive as this is, I have sold several. As I mentioned, I'm the only guy in town that even offers it through the dealership. I'm seriously jealous of you guys that can get the part under $200 and the install in 2 hours. If I could do that, I could sell it for $350 and still make a decent profit.

My dealer in central Wisconsin said it would cost $450 to install cruise control. I don't get it. They give you ABS, which I couldn't care less about (my current car is not ABS and hasn't given me a touch of braking trouble), and a stabilization system, which is something I also don't care about - and yet they omit cruise control. What kind of logic is that? Personally, I find this irritating to the point where I'd reconsider my purchase.

mphil804, I think the reason they don't offer cruise is that this box is really meant for around-town driving. I don't know if I could handle the road noise for more than one trip. For that (other than one trip to show my Blue Baby off) I'll rent a cushiony gas guzzler from Enterprise.

You live in WI and don't care about the VSC? Have you driven it on ice yet? Freezing rain maybe? The snow you get there is more than we get here in VA, and the VSC will not help you get through 3' drifts, but it will help you in light, wet conditions like you wouldn't believe. Aside from an AWD, the xB is the best bad weather car I've ever driven and the VSC is the central reason for that.

I live in wisconsin and we have three inches outside right now and i am glad i have VSC and ABS. But i have to agree not having cruise for an option does not make sence.

Their reasoning behind no cruise is that the car is supposed to be an urban vehicle, not a highway cruiser, which I find rediculous.

mphil804 - what dealer are you looking at? I looked at the dealer in Wisconsin Rapids; I almost bought my car from them, but cruise was $400! I bought my car in Milwaukee. Cruise was $250. You could always buy your car here and drive it back up there.

I'll put it this way, if the car didn't have an option to install cruise on delivery of the vehicle, I wouldn't even consider it. I make several 200 mile plus trips a month... I'm not about to live without it.
