I agree. Is there a way to persuade the dealer to get the vehicle to come with cruise, factory-installed? Or do I have no chance? The idea of doing the Milwaukee thing would be fine but I live in the central WI area and I'd like to be in close proximity to my original dealer for convenience.

Just inform the dealership that you won't be buying from them since you found several other dealerships that offer the cruise as an option on delivery and then list examples. Don't forget that even if you purchase your car from another dealership, you can still get service from the one close to you. If you do buy it from another dealership, make sure you take the original to show them the window sticker with the cruise control listed. Also, talk with the dealership who is offering the install option about the location of who installs it for you so you can inform the other dealership.

I think the xB is great for road trips. The road noise is nothing compared to some cars I have taken road trips in (like my girlfriend's late 90's Tercel--yikes!).
Just turn up the music (or let the head unit turn it up for you).

ZonkBox, check out the tech pages for Noise Deadening. Seems like the way to go for roadsters, without going deaf.

I have read the sound deadening articles and I am not interested in spending the time and money--road/engine noise in the xB doesn't bother me. I wouldn't have even noticed it, had this website not mentioned it (a lot).

Back on topic, though: Cruise Control!
Mine was an option when I bought my car. $275. Worth every penny.
