Default ED stuff as compared with other brands

Hello,
I'm in the market for some 6.5" components and a 10 or 12", 500w RMS sub for my new xB. I will be running the components off a RF Punch 501x (250w x 2) and the sub off a RF Punch 250.2 (about 500w x 1 @ 4 ohms). I have an Alpine deck I'll be running the whole thing off of and I probably won't bother with rear fill for the time being. I was looking at a number of different component/sub combinations, including Alpine Type-X components with an Image Dynamics IDQ sub or Boston Pro 6.5 components with one of their G5 subs. I'm on a limited budget, so I'm shopping around a bit. I'm willing to wait and save for better stuff if need be. How does Elemental Designs' stuff compare with the brands I've mentioned? I'm going for sound quality.
Thanks,
David

I have heard good things about ED, but have not used their stuff. I have the alpine type x and they sound great.

For the price you're going to pay for the eD's, there aren't any better choices.... you CAN get better products for higher prices - but you said you're on a budget so I'd stick with the eD's...

Well, I guess it depends. You can get Alpine Type-X components for around $240 on-line. That's about the same price as ED's component system. ED subwoofers do seem very cheap, but how do they compare with other subs (i.e., Alpine's Type-R, Image Dynamics' IDQ or any of JL's subs?)
Thanks a lot,
David

The Ov series is very much on par or better than the typeR, IDQ, and W6... The 6500s components can generally be had for $185 but they're on low stock right now so there isn't a forum discount.... if it's any inclination, the 6500s were sold in the past for $350 and no one was complaining - they're an outstanding set of components...

and sometime soon (maybe after CES) we're going to see the new 6000s v.2 components out... $95

Thanks a lot, that's very helpful. I see from your signature that you also have a ZX-10. I almost bought one of those about a year ago, but didn't because I was moving to NY and was worried about it being stolen. I'm putting my old ZRX back together so I'll have something to ride this spring.

I want to know how! That must cover every sq. inch of the car. I was about to order like 60 sq ft but am now debating if I might need more.

I completely gutted the car and did everything including the roof. I also did two layers on the outer skins of all doors and one layer on the inner and double layers the rear to get it ready for my new system.

I have 125 sq/ft in mine and needed a little more!

Did not do the roof yet and could have gone more in the front doors and floor pan. Another 50 feet would have been perfect. Its better to have too much when you do it. Removing the guts all over again is whats keeping me from doing more.

175 sq/ft for a fully deadened box seems about right!

How important is it to do the roof? How much power are you running in your systems?
Thanks,
David

Just push down on your roof once and you tell how important it is, there's a ton of flex in it. And it's easy to do once you already have all the other interior pieces out.

I'm not sure on my wattage yet, should be around 2500 though.

Yeah, but what a difference it makes!

Not just for sound system, but for everyday driving. Sooo much quieter. Ride in a deadened xB and you will notice the difference!

Oh, and your stereo sounds better too! A 3dB sound reduction is the equivalent of doubling your power.

150 sq. ft. of eDead v1se + shipping costs would run around $300.
150 sq. ft. of Dynamat Extreme (4.166 Bulk Packs) would cost over $500! That doesn't include any shipping and that is at a price from a discount retailer. It is MUCH more expensive at your average stereo shop.

is the paint sound deadener worth it? not as good quality or is it cheaper because it would take more work?
