fiberglass sub enclosure inside spare tire.
well, I am almost done with my second speaker box for my xb. My first in on ebay, replaced back 2 storage compartment, and held (2) 6.5" subs, sounded really good (check it out).
I wanted to do something different though. SO looking at the back, i noticed how much space was wasted cause the spare tire and how it was mounted. SO, i cut out the center of the foam that holds the spare so it can be laid in the upside down.
next i constructed a fiberglass box to fit in the spare. I did this by cuttng a mdf ring that just fit inside the lip of the spare, and was about a 1" thick ring. next i covered the whole tire and wheel in duck tape. then sparyed it with non stick cooking spray. I also cut a small circle to go over where the lug holes are. Next i began adding resin and fiberglass until i had a bowl that was solid and about a 1/4 thick, maybe a lil more of fiberglass. I then drilled a hole in the bottom that lined up with a lug hole inthe wheel, and resined in some speaker wire. I then added a top to the bowl, with the proper cutout size for the sub ( a shollow mount elemental designs 10"). i then coated the inside and our of the box with rubberized truck liner.
after doing the math, after speaker displacement, the box has about .33 cubit feet of air space. It sounds really good to. I need to build a cover for it though, as its about 1/2" from fitting under the stock cover, i could probally make a version 2.0 fit under there. But i am building an amp rack that will replace the stock storage are, and it will have a nice cover over it all.
all and all, it sounds really good, and uses no space in the car. This would work great on the xa too, since it uses the same spare, and has even less hatch room.
I will post pics when ever i get home

it sounds really good. Goes pretty load too, but bottoms out at max. I might have an air leak. I did mask the spare, thats just resin dust, it all wipes off. I got the cover and amp rack done last weekend, so ill post pics later today. If anyone is interested in one of these, i would make one or sell this one, as I already have ideas on how to make a betterone
well, here are the pics i promised. the only thing lacking is finishig the amp rack, which i dont have a amp for, so it might wait.
here is a pic of it finished and installed

this is a close up of the grill. It is a metal grill with speaker grill fabric to blask it out. I used a 12" so it would be easier to get the hole arounf the 10" sub

this is going to be the amp rack. I plan on putting i a fals ebottom that the tools will be under, and the amps on top. I will cut a window in to the cover, and put in a screen covered in speaker grill material so the amp can cool, but no one can peak in a see them
this shows that it is perfectly flush with the seats when they are laid down.
I am thinking of making a few more of these, so if you are interested PM me, or look at my other thread
