Having problem using AUX connector 2006 xB
Hi all,
Here is the thing. In our newly acquired 2006 xB, we have the upgraded stereo Dvd unit that came standard in the limited edition model. Now, in our old car we were using an mini ipod or shuffle in our old 2006 xB with the standard stereo set up. We were connecting the i-pod to the AUX plug and uaing th minijack connector. The old car didn't have the actual I-pod connector just the AUX connector. So, we go to use the same set up in our new car and I can't get the AUX connector to work for the life of me. The instrucion manual says I should be able to push the AUX button and it should switch to minijack mode enabaling me to use the shuffle yet nothing happens. Now, this new xB has both connectors. Is the instruction manual wrong and you can only use the I-pod connector and the AUX function is disabled? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Dan

Wow, I can't believe that nobody here has used an ipod with the Alpine stereo! I finally had to go down to my local Toyota dealer for some anwsers. They seem to be scratching their heads on this one too. So much for technical support.........Yeah, so me the village idiot has an idea while the "tech dude" is fiddling with my car. He's pluging this into that and trying to get his i-phone to work using the Aux plug in my car which according to the manual should work right? So, I'm making suggestions and telling him what I know and what I have tried. Then I get this idea. "Hey, tech dude" ask I, the other connector, the i-pod one, is that a special Toyota connector or an over the counter one? I continue on:"I'm asking cause it's a weird looking connector and I'm not familair with it. Is it possible that even though I have both connectors, Toyota in it's infinite wisdom (secret meaning: make me buy more stuff), only wired the i-pod connector to work on the stereo and not the aux?" He says: "well yeah, it's possible" So, we walk to the parts counter together and attempt to look up this part. They don't even show the Alpine as an option or have any info on what came in the limited edition XBs but in the accessory book, they had (hand written) a part number listing a "special connector for the i-pod" It wasn't even listed! Some poor slob probably went through the same thing and at some point somebody wrote it in. So I ordered it and hope this solves my problem. It better because it'sa an $80 part! I guess this "special connector" makes the i-pod interact with the stereo. I'll keep you all posted.
That sucks. I don't know about the special edition radio but with mine all you do is plug in any MP3 player (make sure it's on and playing) then push the AUX button. I have the factory radio still. The downside to using the AUX port though is that the volume is low. I'm wondering if your AUX wires came unplugged, I got the interior lights with mine and the light on the drivers side flashes now so I'm guessing the connection is loose.
Hi all,
News and problems solved to any actually following this high tech soap. To use any i-pod or i-phone or anything else with the letter "i" in it, one must purchase one very expensive cable from Toyota, part #PT546-21062. This puppy cost about 87.00 plus tax and hooks upto the i-pod connector. You cannot use an i-pod shuffle connected to the "minijack" at least with our set up (refer to previous post). I can only assume you cannot use any audio device using the minijack connector even though it is there and appears ready for your plug in enjoyment. Well, that's it for me.
I am now an expert and poorer for the experience.

The way I'm reading your post is that you had to buy a cable that you plug into the iPod connector then from there into the iPod. That's probable, since I'm sure Apple patented a special cable so you could only use that one to use it in your car so they can make more money, then you also get the nice markup from Toyota. The part that doesn't make sence is the AUX not working. You do have a cable that has two ends that look like the end of a pair of head phones right? As long as you do and its going from AUX to any MP3 player it should work unless your wires are loose or unplugged.
You hit the nail on the head. We are having one of those underdash light kits put in next week. Since the panel around the i-pod/aux inputs needs to be pulled to install a switch, I'm going to have them see if there is a wire connected to the aux input.
UPDATE: I had the light kit put in today. That had it's own set of problems. I ask the tech to see if the AUX was connected. It wasn't. A planned conspiracy? A production error? Anyway lol, I now have use of both minijack and ipod, problem solved. I hope this post helps some other poor slob...........
