help with finding a new head unit..
Heya i have an 05 xb and im trying to eventually replace the whole system in the car - but im starting with the headunit because i want to have an aux jack and a USB jack - so im wanting to find a headunit that has an aux and usb jack on the front - and one thats double din (i guess this is easier to install in the xb right?? dont really know much about all this) and i also want it to be able to support new speakers when i get them in the future ... i have been looking around for something thats not to expensive but thats nice and sounds good (i listen to bass-heavy electronic music a la Dubstep) - i found this guy on sonicelectronix for pretty cheap, seems nice - any help would be greatly appreciated!
Not trying to help with locating a new head unit, but you might want to check this out:

The only thing I'm not too fond of with that Eclipse... there's only two preamp outs. If you wanted to add a sub of some kind later, it would need to be tuned like a slave amp off of the rear channel with no control at the head unit.

Actually, not having a separate sub out can be a good thing. Just set your sub (by the level controls on the amp) to what you want, then change the overall bass contour with your bass control. It gets you a smoother, more even bass, instead of sounding like a you got a sub with a stereo attached to it. Don't be put off on getting a single DIN unit, there are plenty of good mounting adapter kits out there. Crutchfield comes to mind (they also give you info on installing the adapter, too). There are more single DIN heads than dual DIN heads, so that gives you more options. And many of them have both AUX and USB ports in the front. My Sony has both in front.

I would definitely spend more than $100, you get what you pay for.

I just replaced my Head unit:
These are the questions you have to ask yourself:
MONEY: will most likely make diff between Single din or Touch screen.
IPOD or Regular USB: For front USB no problem...but for rear USB...ehh
Extras: HD, Nav, Sat
First things that TICKED ME OFF.
Can not Find Quality Brand with BIG screen and HD built in.
NONE with Front USB and Rear USB.
Nice Double DIN with REAR USB: Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine REQUIRE special cable to run IPOD.
Since SCIONs have been very IPOD friendly...I am guessing to many of us IPOD friendly Stereo is a big deal.
Single DIN Favorites:
Kenwood KDC-HD545U: $170 HD radio built in, IPOD full controls, Front USB
Sony CDX-GT700HD: $180 HD radio built in, IPOD full controls, RDS and Front USB
I really like the Price and Features of Pioneer AVH-p3100dvd, hard to beat for $300. Front USB is handy, and supports IPOD 100% with normal IPOD cable. But you will either have to remove your IPOD every time you park or risk getting broken in to. I have heard Bypassing DVD-while-driving protection is not so easy on Pioneer.
Newer AVH-p3200 will be out soon for about $400
I got closeout Refurb Kenwood 514 from Crutchfield, nice head unit for $300.
You may have to get newer kenwood DDX512 or DDX516
I was a little TIKED OFF that I HAD to buy a $30 cable to plug my ipod in to it.
Pyle PLDN750D and Jensen VM8023HD, have low prices and lots of features…but I am not familiar with the quality of sound or reliability.

Bypass is easy on Pioneers. There's a great write up on Youtube using a relay and a few short wires. (works on AVHP4100 great, others should be similar)
IPod cable can be routed to the glovebox so the iPod's fairly easy to access and hidden from view.

I routed my IPOD cable to the little flip drawer below the AC controls.
I just cut a square hold in the top of it and snaked the cable behind the AC controls.
I will post a pic on my Profile pics.
Some Lessons Learned for Installing Car Stereo in the scion xb1:
1. Before you disconnect the battery. Move gear shift all the way back and make sure hand brake is nice and tight. This will give you the room you need to pull off the center console.
2. SCREW hints. When removing screws have a MAGNET handy, $3 well spent. As I un-screw a screw I keep a little telescoping magnet on the screw so that when it is completely loose it does not fall in to the dash somewhere. When SCREWing back I place a little Dynamat on the end of the screwdriver so the screw stays tacked to it while I place it in the screw hole. TRUST ME...these little steps can save you hours trying to retrieve some screw, bolt or clip dropped behind some panel or dash.
3. Pull off Silver Temp and AC *****, there are two screws there remove them.
4. Pull off center panel start at bottom 1/3 then move up. Use a hard plastic trim tool to pry off panel (or flat screwdriver with a couple of layers of masking tape on the blade part. This will reduce the scratches on the trim panel.
5. DO NOT forget to power the Antenna Amplifier in your Xb! Your new stereo will have a wire labeled "Power Antenna" use that to connect to the Harnass Adaptor "Power Antenna". My Crutchfield Wire Harnass did have it. If you are wiring direct or just wan to make sure...it is the Pin 8 on the R2 connector of your Scion XB1.
6. Ohh...and for Kenwood the DVD bypass was easy I just grounded the Green Line (parking brake switch).
On a seperate note, YES I did like the Pioneer 4100, especially the Hard buttons for Next and Previous...Just wanted to minimize the moving parts for reliability (flip down screen) and found it hard to justify the extra $100.
OHH do not forget to get a screen protector for your LCD Touch screen. I got one at FRYs for $8

If you used a aftermarket harnass adaptor, double check to see which line is the "Power Antenna" cable.
Also make sure your new head unit has a "power Antenna wire"...It is just a +12V that is switched when head unit turns on.
(DO NOT think of powering the antenna AMP all the time you will end up burning your ANT amp, and wearing down your battery)
ALSO make sure you connected your antenna cable securely, the thick black cable with long center pin.
If you still are having problems...tell us what kind of stereo, what kind of harnass and even post a pic.
Good Luck.
