Help me build an portable sub enclosure!
hey guys,
I want to build a sub enclosure that I can take out whenever I want. Kinda like the bazookas...but without the bazooka. I'm willing to build it myself, but I just need some professional directions. I don't want to t-tap wires or anything...
I'm guessing I need an amp, sub, wood, and whatever else...
Thanks

an 8" or 10" should suffice... I personally have a drill, dremel, hammer, screw drivers...and hands... I have fisher price soldering skills (can't solder tiny points). I have a friend who can help me if I need help... I'm looking for xA/xB specifics...outputs, portability...etc...
Well, no matter what you do, you're going to have to tap some wires to get a signal to your amp. There's no getting around that cause your stock head-unit doesn't have RCA pre-outs. If you get an aftermarket head unit......then that's a different story.
As far as box and subs go........I'd say look for a 10".......and do some research into subwoofers that perform well in small sealed enclosures. You can build a small sealed box that is basically just a cube, and slap some heavy duty velcrow on the bottom (like I did to my box).....and viola......it's not moving anywhere while you drive around, but if you wan it out, you can take it out.
For example. If you want nice, clean, versatile bass.......a setup like this might work for you:
Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d 10" dual 4 ohm voice coil subwoofer: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...090120949&rd=1
Hifonics Brutus BX500d D class sub, which will run your sub (properly bridged and wired) at 250 watts: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
...or if you want a little more power.....
Hifonics Brutus BX1000d D class sub, which will run your sub at 700 watts: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...090597091&rd=1
And you can put this speaker in a tiny sealed box of 0.6 cu. feet. Building such a box shouldn't be hard. You should buy 3/4" mdf wood.

Well you're going to need a saw to cut the wood
Despite what everyone says around here, don't use MDF, especially if you want to take it in and out often (MDF is HEAVY!). Use Baltic Birch or marine grade plywood for the enclosure. You'll pay a bit more for it but your enclosure will sound a lot better and weigh a lot less.
The smallest enclosure you can make is probably a sealed enclosure. Polyfill will let you undersize the cabinet a bit as well. I have some little noname Aluminum Cone DVC 8"s if you want something to experiment with, $10 + shipping... Let me know
