Im doing some painting and want to paint that silver on my automatic ****, i can get it off but the wire is still connected. Also i havent looked yet but i also want to paint the silver tabs on the sides of the steering wheel. Do i just unscrew the two screws behind the steering wheel and pop off the cover. The silver accent can be removed from the shifter with a flat-head screwdriver and care. It pries right off, just be mindfull that the overdrive button is attached to the accent piece.

As you pull the accent free from the shifter, you'll notice that that a small circuit board is attached to it via small snap-tabls. Prying those away from the board will allow the accent piece to be removed. Also, you'll need to cut the small wire-tie that keeps the wiring connected to the accent piece for easy removal.

I hope this helps. It's been a while since I removed mine.
