the only alternative is to cut the speaker from the mount....this will trash your stock speakers but you'll be able to use the brackets to fit your new speakers...

to drill them out, get a bit the size of the small indent in the middle of the rivet, and just go straight through it.......it should just fall apart when you drill all the way through.......after removing the old speaker and bracket, you can easily make a new bracket/spacer out of MDF, a drill, and a jigsaw......

the only reason i didn't take this approach is that I didn't like the rigidity of the stock mounting brackets.....so I went with the MDF....

A self tapping screw is a screw that drills its own hole for you. These are mostly used in metal and plastic cause of the hardness of the surface.

you drill out the center of the rivet with a 5mm drill bit then cut the old speaker surround and cut the basket out leaveing the center to mount your speaker to the rears have bolts so you know how to remove those do the same mutalation job to it then you can use those as a base i installed infinity 500si and 600si (deep mount fronts) they have rotateable tweeters and they sound great and are inexpensive

that's what this guy just said.....he cut the wires from the basket instead of cutting and splicing the harness off...

After you drill out the rivits you can get an adapter to install your new speakers. I got mine from crutchfield.
