Default Idea for a new (digital) speedo project, need input!

Hey all, I was driving around today and though how cool it would be to have a digital speedometer and/or fuel gauge (I like the analog tach but I imagine that could be digitized as well).

In any case, here's the story...I have a BSEE so I'm pretty competent with electronics, but I've never messed around with a speedometer before so I don't really know what kind of signals or components they use. So my question to anybody who may know is first, do you think this is possible? second, do you know where I can get a wiring diagram and/or exploded diagram of the gauge assembly? third, do you know where/how much I could find a new/used gauge assembly to fool around with so I don't destroy my current one?

Basically this would just be a hobby project for my own enjoyment but I think if it's possible it would be really cool. I'd love any input, especially if you know of anyone who has done something like this for any other cars (scion or not).

That would be a hot idea! Have you seen the new speedo design in the new (2006 i believe) civics? it's a really bright and sharp looking digital displaty. having a guage cluster with those types of guages (with that look) in the xB would be awesome!

yeah, the new civic gauges are nice. I'm not as worried about the exact aesthetics right now though...first have to figure out how to convert the current (i think) analog output to digital. Don't know if it's just a 'simple' d-a converter or what yet and I really want to avoid tinkering unless I have a replacement if something goes terribly wrong.

I know autometer sells the converters - from analog to digital - for their guages. I dont know if this is of any help to you but they seem to have what you mentioned.

Dakota Digital makes a lot of digital replacement dashes. You can call them and see what they say. If there is enuf intrest they may put them on the market.

Such as this is there replacement for an old jeep......

and for an old bronco.....
