Default Interior Lock Modification

Perform this at you own risk, I will not be held responsble for screw ups.

Are you tired of cruising with you arm out the window and hitting the door lock. Doesn't feel to good. Well here is the answer to that, plus it looks pretty sweet.

This will show you how to shorten the locks and make them flush when the doors are locked.

The tools you will need:
Phillips Head Screwdriver
Dremel
Metal Grinding Dremel Bit
Small Sanding Disc Dremel Bit

1. First step is to remove your door panels.

2. Once you have removed your door panel, unsrew the plastic lock from the metal lock latch.

3. Use the Metal Grinding bit with the Dremel and grind 1/4" (more or less) off of each metal rod.

4. Now take each plastic lock and cut or grind off 1/2" (more or less) to make sure the lock will go completely down.

*Note: You'll now want to put the plastic lock back on the metal rod to check for fit, by locking and unlocking the door before you put the door panel back on.

5. Once you determine that everything fits and locks, put the door panels back on and enjoy the new look.

Hope someone gets some use from this. I know I love this mod, and it was so simple. All questions about it are welcome.

Nice write up. I know a couple of guys did this a few years back - Superfreestyle comes to mind - who got it from someone or other - but no one ever bothered to take the pictures for those not so DIY enabled.

I'm curious how you did it so that it could be returned to stock? If you would mind posting the steps, I would love to know. I don't need pictures seeing as I have already done this, as the pictures above show. But I would like to know how you went about doing it. Maybe others would like to know how to do it without cutting and grinding.

take the white retainer and flip it..... i think i used a 15/32 drill bit and drilled the hole in the ***** deeper (almost through the top but not) then put them back on and adjusted all to desired height.

you can also drill out the hole in the plastic lock piece & it will sit lower & sit just about flush, & then if you don't like it you can just go & buy new Plastics ($10 ea), instead of having to try to extend the rod.

What do you mean take the white retainer and flip it? Is the rod threaded?
Thanks.

the white retainer will not let the ***** go down any further than factory locked position but if you flip them then there are perfect ..... the rod is threaded...... i didnt tap mine out further, i just held the rod with pliers and tightened her on down.....

don't mean to rain on everybodys fun, but wouldn't it be kinda hard if your battery all of a sudden dies... with your door locks to short to grab and the power out to pop them up or put the windows down.... what would you do?
