Default iPod aux hookup to stock '05 head unit?

Hi, everybody... I just spent 45 minutes digging through search and didn't find anything, so here goes...

I have the original '04 / '05 stock Pioneer head unit - you know, the one with the buttons that everyone hated? I've also got an iPod and I'm just not satisfied with the FM transmitter anymore - my commute takes me across the city of Chicago and there's some stupid station transmitting on nearly every frequency at some point during the drive.

Besides, if my iTrip gets out-transmitted by some teenage girl's in the next car and my radio starts thundering Rihanna ONE MORE TIME I'm going to wreck the car.

I have a friend who says it's easy to hook up an audio cable to my unused Satellite Radio jack, except we cannot find the cable that we should use. He says it took him three minutes on the Internet to find the cable and a DIY to hook it up to his Aveo (I know, ewwwww) but we can't find anything like that for the xB. I was hoping someone could point me to a DIY or at least a discussion about it. I've always gotten the answers I've needed on this board, so... *crosses fingers*

To answer some of the questions already:

a) I do NOT want to get rid of the head unit. I've grown attached to its blatantly user-unfriendly interface
b) I do NOT want to control the iPod through the head unit. I like being able to hold it in front of my face, since I have this thing about not driving into other cars. Any audio input cable will work just fine.

I mean, maybe I'm overthinking this - it could be as simple as getting any audio IN cable with a jack to the iPod's headphone jack......if so, my apoligies, but electronics are SO not my strong suit.

THANKS :D

I assume you don't have an AUX jack like my '06? I hope you get an answer because I would hate to be without my iPod!

Naw, the 05's didn't come with them. I'M SO DEPRIVED!

I was able to last about 90 seconds without my iPod, and then I drove to Best Buy to get an iTrip. Unfortunately, it's nearing the end of its functional life (the wires are coming apart) and I'd hate to spend another $50 if I could solve the problem more effectively.

Crutchfield sells a kit, but it costs more than the iPod did -- there's GOT to be a better way

if you search the interweb or scionlife for the PIE-TOY3-AUX, you should find what you need.

The thing should cost about 50-70 bucks, plugs into the connection on the back of the unit for an external CD changer, and gives you a standard AUX in (RCA jacks). You can then get an RCA to 1/8" stereo cable, feed it through the "oven" (drilling a hole is sort of needed) , and plug it into the headphone jack on your Ipod.

I essentially did this on my '05 head unit, hopefully '04s are reasonably similar? I posted something about it on here a year or so ago, after reading about it on here, too. search is finicky, but eventually gets you stuff.

Get a peripheral iPOD2CAR mod. It's about 89~99 bucks. And It is worth it. You can control your iPOD through the head unit, ORRRRRRRRRR, by your iPOD. it works wonders :D No problems for me.

I have a peripheral adapter that plugs into the back of the 05 head units. I have it for sale if you're interested.

It's that, plus the harness from the box to the HU.

Also, you can control it thru the HU or the iPod, either way works. The only thing is that our HU's aren't 100% compatible, so for the time of the song on the HU, it blinks between 1:00 and 2:00...other than that it's perfect. Been using it for about 3 years now.

Oh yea, and it charges the iPod.

I'd go with the PIE adapter, I think more people have had better luck with that. Make sure you get the right model, there is TOY03-AUX and then there is a TOY03-AUX/S. We discussed the differences here: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=186040

But really, any of the suggested products here will most likely work. A lot of people want this for their HU so there are a lot of products for this. Hope you find what you need.

I have the PIE adapter and I love it. I found the adapter at Circuit City in the stereo section by all of the wiring harnesses. I found the wiring harness at a stereo install shop. The best thing about the PIE adapter is that is has two inputs, so I fashioned an aux input for my MP3 player over above the glovebox, so it is out of the way.

All you have to do is press the CD button to get to the 'CD Changer' option on the radio, and then select between song 1 and 2 to switch from satellite radio to MP3 player on mine.

Hope this helps.

Hi...Is the adapter still available? I'm interest and live in Parsippany.
Is it difficult to install in the 05 head unit?
Thanks,
Adam

@ thinline: there's a thread in scionlife that explains the installation. It's pretty simple. If you're really fast, it can take 20mins tops.

I took my time, so about an HR for a noob like me. :D

Been using it for a year now, and it is excelent! No more MP3cds!
