Default Ipoding my car Need Suggestions

Hey guys, I am trying to install my Ipod into my 04 XB head unit and I need some suggestions from you. I am going to use the following
1. P.I.E. TOY-AUX / USASpec DF-TOY (I haven't decided which one is better and suggestions?Where can I get the best deals?)

2. 3.5-RCA6mm 3.5 headphone Jack to RCA Adapter Cable

3. Belkin Auto Kit for iPod w/ Dock Connector
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=193794

4. Ipod U2 Edition

5. Ipod dock cradle (I see there is some black ones on ebay any experiences on those?
http://cgi.ebay.com/BLACK-IPOD-UNIVE...QQcmdZViewItem

6. Accesory cigarette plug

My idea is too hook everything up without displaying any cables and I would like the cradle to fit in the ash tray so that I can just pull out the tray and plug in my ipod and i am reday to go any ideas about the ash tray is it too small for the cardle? My 2nd choice would be the cup holder. Any suggestions will be great Thank you.

I've been using the little cup holder mp3 player insert that came with my 06 xB, but I"ve wanted something that was a bit closer to eye level. I'm thinking about going with a cheap holder that can adhere to the dash or clip onto some surface like one of these:

But your ash-tray idea sounds interesting. I find that I prefer to control the iPod directly, as any other remotes or iPod HU's take away from it's ease of use.

Like your idea about the ashtray. I just use the "roadtrip", it would be cool to have that wireless remote.

blueboxer,

the only ipod you can really fit into the ashtray is the nano. I know because I have tried. I took a dremel to the ashtray and nano dock and even after all the modification, the angle of the dock in the ashtray means that even a nano touches the little drawer above the ashtray. But, thats ok, since it gives the nano support. I have power running to the nano from the radio harness into the dock and a mini to rca cable running to the back of my eclipse head unit. The only way to allow your U2 iPod to fit, would be to modify the mechanism that holds the tray in to allow it to pull out further and it didnt really seem possible when I was trying to make my U2 iPod fit. The nice thing with going with the nano is the nano fits in the ashtray when closed for storage.

good luck!

Default custom iPod dock

blueboxerxb,

Here are some photos of my nano install. I had to cut out quite a bit from the back of the ashtray and on the front bottom of the ashtray immediately behind the handle for the ashtray. I am also using a ground loop isolator since there is noise when powering the iPod from the car's electrical system. I got mine from crutchfield for about $15 and it works great. Let me know if you have any questions about the install.

I have used everything attempting to get the best sound from my iPod, nothing was good enough, so I decided to spend the $100 bucks on the Alpine iPod Interface to use with my Alpine CDA-9851, and I am soooo happy with it! I've been using it now for like a year, and never had a problem!!! I would NEVER use anything else!! I totally recommend it!!

Hmm a new HU sounds interesting, but my budget is low... do you think the stock HU worth something?

You could probably get around $100 bucks for the stock unit.

I had the usa spec and it did not have enough volume for me and you cant change any functions on the ipod thru the factrory radio. TheMetra-Toyota-compatible-iPod-Adapter-TYIP01, would be a good choice it allows you to control the ipod thru the factory radio, dont know about the volume though and its cheaper than going with a new headunit and ipod adapter.

bugless, I dont think that I will invest on a nano due to my budget what do you think abt a custom fiberglass dock, I will just run the dock connector to fiberglass base.

I took out the ashtray and fabbed my own tray using the ipod dock. I fit a fullsize ipod in it no problem. the only issue is that the setup I use wont read the ipod through the dock. its not a fancy thing but I could prob get a couple pics and send you the dimensions and all for it
