Default painting the dash

is it possible to paint the dash and not have the paint come off when you scratch it or for a profesional job do you need to put fabric such as vinyl over everything i tried painting the dash in my civic primer sand paint gloss and it looked hot I used the marble tight spray paint they sell at homie depot for like 9-10 dollars a can depending on which one you go to . it stayed hot for about a month then my copilot scratch the dash and walla all that hard work came right off to reveal the original dash color

I'm still very much a newbie with the car stuff, and I'm sure there are more ways to do this, but here's how I did mine:

Prep the dash by sanding down the stock texture, then follow it up with a few coats of flexable primer/filler. (Sanding with something like 400-600 grit in between coats). By then.. the dash is really really smooth. Next, spray a couple of coats of adhesion promoter to help the paint to stick. Then paint! (At least 3-4 coats) I suggest using industrial-type lamps to help the paint to dry. After the paint is *completely* dry, time to clear-coat. Comes out quite nice if you do it right!

Peace,
m@
