I would suggest saving up for a high priced one. My Valentine One would detect a pig around a corner and underwater if need be. Plus you can program it to totally throw out X-band, K-Band, anything.

There's a new player in town when it comes to police radar, called POP radar. Basically the cop radar's you using the POP system which emits tons of radar signals at a higher-than-normal rapid pulse rate. Bad thing is, not a lot of detectors are equipped to handle this. For more info just go to one of the good radar sites: Speedlabs.com or Radartest.com
Bad thing about POP radar is that innacuracy is directly related to how far away from the gun you are. So its pretty inefficient from long range (bogus numbers, crazy readings etc.) But Porky doesn't care.

A couple detectors that ARE equipped to handle the new threat are the Valentine One, and the newest version of the Escort Passport 8500, dubbed the X50 model. Both are expensive but once you buy one you will see where that money went.

look at the valentine one.. it might be expensive.. but it is upgradable.. if you read their site.. if they come out with a new feature you can send yours in and for a small fee you get the upgrade...

if you spend $300 on a new detector... and next year they have a new feature in a newest version of the same detector or maybe tweaked for better detection.. you basically have to go out and purchase a new detector.... with V1 you pay maybe half and get the upgrade..

The simplest way to keep from getting a speeding ticket is not investing $300 in a radar detector ... you just need to SLOW DOWN. Go the limit or keep with the flow of traffic. I don't understand why everyone is always in such a damn hurry now-a-days. The number of people I see flying around my neighborhood (25 mph posted limit) and flying through school zones disgusts me. If one of those jerks was to hit one of my kids or one of the neighbor kids because they were going too fast they would be in a world of hurt!!

Besides, once that detector goes off it is usually too late. Cops have caught on to the radar detector crowd and don't just stand there with the radar gun on all the time. They watch for people they perceive as going fast and then hit them with a pulse from the gun. If they can see you and tag you going too fast it doesn't matter how much money you have invested in a detector because you are busted right there. Besides, a lot of cops are using the laser based speed guns now and the a radar detector doesn't help a bit with those. Best advice is to leave a bit earlier to get where you are going so you don't have to speed to get there.

Passport SRX full integrated radar detector. All stealth and built in. One front radar eye, two front laser jammers, one rear laser jammer. I have a V1 and am buying this to add on (to have 2) later this month! Only way to go!

Find a good lawyer who can solve your ticket problems. I speed all the time (nothing crazy like 46 in a school zone, but...). On the rare occasion I get a speeding ticket. I give it to my lawyer, pay $100, and it goes away. No insurance worries, no court appearances, no hassle. The good thing about radar detectors, however, is they provide small entertainment for the cop that's writing your speeding ticket.

quality radar detectors like the valentine 1 work very well if they are used responsibly and within their limits. to work properly, radar detectors depend upon signals being bounced off of other vehicles or objects. this will give you an early warning. slowing from 80 or 70 down to 60 mph is much easier than slowing from 100 down to 60 mph so just use your detector only as a tool and DEPEND upon your brain

The cops in my area leave their radar on when they are pulled over at the side of the road. I think it depends on if they have the radar guns that are able to perform P.O.P, or instant on radar, which I dont believe they have. I have also come across numerous cops who for whatever reason have forgot to turn off their radar, so when they came up driving behind me all sneaky, my radar let me know. The only situations where I can see myself getting caught are by the cops on motorcycles that rarely frequent my area. They are the only ones who use laser, which is undetectable until it hits you.

yeah. . . in general, I agree with you. But sometimes, I drive long distances at 3AM when there is zero traffic. With four hours of driving, 10-20mph makes a big difference. But, I personally only speed when it is clear and safe to do so. If there is traffic, unsafe road conditions, or potential hazards or dangers, I slow down. Besides, city driving has the least pay off for speeding, as you usually get caught at the traffic lights anyway. But radar is also good for the a-hole cop who sets up speed traps for people going 5mph over the speed limit on a wide open four lane road.

Yes. . . this is true. Also, if you make it a point to make sure that you are not THE fastest car in traffic (by letting a few cars pass you now and then), odds are that other cars will be gunned before you, and you will get a heads up. This is usually how I operate.

It's not neccesarily that... I use my radar for goin a little over the speed limit on flat open roads. Some speed limits i dont understand. Like 35 on a farm road...wtf?

My friend has G35 Coupe and spent over $1500 to get a top of the line detector and laser jammer. What he did was have the detector and jammer put it the front grill of his car. Then he had lights wired through the steering column. On the top column itself, he has these two bulbs set up. So when it's radar, the red light goes on and when it's laser the blue light goes on. I think the sound is also wired through the stereo with an option to turn it off. He's an idiot.

My biggest issue isn't those people that are goint 5-10 mph over the limit on the freeway or on a wide open freeway/highway. Its the jerks flying around blind corners in a residential neighborhood doing 45-50 MPH that really tick me off. It can be difficult to do the speed limit on a freeway when every car around you is doing 10 mph over the limit. However, I still think that keeping with the flow of traffic and not going 10-15 mph faster than everyone else on the road is your best bet.

Personally, I don't need to invest in a radar detector because I don't find it necessary to speed everywhere I go. If I'm on the freeway and every car around me is going 5-10 mph over the limit, then I will match speed with the flow of traffic. I realize that there are a lot of young drivers on this site that don't consider the same things that I consider. Once you get older and have children your perspective on life changes a lot. A good friend of mine is a neurosurgeon and does a lot of pediatric cases. Most of the pediatric head injuries he sees are auto vs. pedestrian accidents where the driver was speeding and couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting the child. A full 90% of these types of accidents occur in residential neighborhoods. People out there think that if they have the "fuzz buster" on that it gives them a license to exceed the speed limit. This arragont attitude will change once they have struck and killed or maimed a child. One poster on this thread admitted that he got his ticket while speeding through a school zone ...

I agree, I speed a lot, but I speed on the open highway, I never speed in a residential area or a school zone.

I agree with the residential and school zones. Keep in mind radar detectors are only as good as the roads, meaning if the road is straight the detector will work further distances. If there are hills it will definately affect the distance and if there are curves in the road it will definately affect the detector.
