Default RADAR Detectors

I'm in the market of purchasing a radar detector. If you own a valentine ONe or K40 please post your opinion on these two products.

Squirrel, I'm sure you have a lot of experience on this topic...

That's what I'm talking about. How's the range from the rear and sides?

I have a the top of the line passport 8500 x50. its pretty sweet on its own. BUT i also had tweeter install the zr3 laser shifter which is much like the k40 for laser but also scrambles the signal. Its a great item in CT where there are too many cops. The total system is sweet, though i would say i drive way to fast now with it, as my average highway speed is probably about 90-95.

Roger, teddy has one remember. :D And that thing is freaking awesome, whenever I am driving with teddy it goes off half a mile from the radars. Very nice!

I have two V1's and am considering selling one. I only use them on extended road trips. I bought a second one for my wife's car, but haven't had a chance to hardwire either one.

In a nutshell, the V1 is great. I haven't tried any others. I particularly like the bogey counter (tells you how many signals it is picking up) and the directional buttons. It has saved me numerous times on road trips to and from Reno and So Cal. Picks up radar on 50 and 80 around curves before you can see the CHP. On the long stretch of 5 between the Bay Area and LA, it again picks up the radar signal before you can see the CHP. It even picked up two separate radar signals from two CHP cars parked back to back ahead of me on the shoulder.

PM me if you're interested. BTW, I'm in San Leandro. Oh yeah, I'm also a friend of Squirrel's - all the way back from high school.

radar detectors work awesome, i cant afford the expense of the V1 but that cheap-o one i have has saved me from over 30+ tickets easily, cheap ones arnet too great when i lived in san jose, too many buildings and they use laser there as well, but i moved to central cali where its more country, the radars pick up smokeys far far away, and i highly doubt they have the budget to be handing out lasers out here any ways, i hears theres only a handfull of lasers in all of cali, and even less of officers trained on how to use em, so im safe with my cheap one for now.
if you travel alot and across america, i would highly recommend investing in somethign nice like a V1, you must think of it as just that and INVESTMENT, it will pay for it self quickly.

i have a typical $100 radar/lazer/vg2 dectetor, i must say, if you can realize the principles that a detector works off of, then 1/4 to 1/2 mile is a good warning. + learn how to read led's for x, k , ka , lazer, vg2, and know what those radar's mean in your area...

ive encountered that cops in this area use ka. thats pretty much it. those "your speed is" boxes are usually K, and so are gorcery stores, occasional X band radars are very weak, and lazer and vg2 seem to go off randomly in sacramento..

What does the valentine run for? $500 or something like that?

I saw an IS300 show car in a magazine, the guy somehow had his V1 wired so the directional sensors and info was all displayed in his rearview mirrior (which was an LCD screen)

I have no idea how that was done since I'm pretty sure the V1 doesn't have video outs or anything, but that's amazingly cool.

Acfive nows what he's talking about. The V1 is hands down the only way I feel comfortable speeding. If I don't have it in my ride I don't speed. Get my point. You get what you pay for.........

Acfive...can you tell me how to hardwire my V1. I haven't been using it in my box because I can't figure out how to mount/install the big sucker.

thanks,

yeah, some cops actualy like it(just never any of the ones we meet, lol) they say it keeps the driver more alert, which i think it does, anytime that beep comes, the brake comes immediatly after it, not slammed, just tapped to drop that 5-10 miles over i usualy am.

I have not looked into hardwiring the V1 into the xB. Generally, you're looking for a good ground and a switched power source i.e. one that's on when the ignition is on and off when the ignition is shut off. Every V1 includes the necessary wires and connectors to do this.
