Seagate Scion xB
Give it five years and all cars will be like this... good to see computer parts manufacturers modding cars.

I guess I was most excited when they metioned that Seagate is working on making their droves less sensitive to shock/vibration/extreme temps.
For awhile now, tech companies have been focusing of mobility and integration of wireless devices. It's cool to see manufacturers are actually taking the next step.
Most of my time in my xB is on 1+ hr long trip. Most often my trips are 4 hrs or longer. MP3 cds only hold a certain number of songs and all the ipod adapters out there seem overpriced and provide questionable functionality. If I'm going to stick a new head unit in there then why not just a computer?
I'm just saying it's good to see that they are heading in this direction.
CherryBox - what are you planning on putting in? I want a massive amount of hd storage space, but I'm not sure of where to put it. I was thinking of fabricating a center console for the rear seats. You?

CLick the link in my profile to see my quick and easy computer-in-car solution. it's not as perdy as the dash molded OEM looking stuff but it gets the job done and more!
As for the massive amount of HD storage space - you can get a couple of USB external drives and mount them under the seat (either passenger or driver). there is a ton of room down there and it can easily accomodate about 4-6 drives (depending on how nucking futs you plan on going... there is a dude at mp3car.com with 2 terabytes of storage in his taxi!!!

You know, honestly.. its not that impressive. It's just a omputer in the car.. with an interface over windows. How many of you would surf the internet while driving? lol Yeah i know.. thats not all its used for.. but it just seems like this whole thing would be wayyyyy too complicated to use when your driving.. Am i right?
I'm sure a touchscreen navigation system + an ipod (installed) would be less than this will cost not installed..

The solution is not for everybody. I would not expect someone older to put the time and effort into putting a computer in the car - which is also why they can afford spending $3 grand on a factory solution with 1/5th of the features.
Having a computer in a car is a poormans' factory navigation/music/etc replacement. that's it.
And as for surfing the internet, although it's really unnecessary, I have been waiting for friends outside of their houses and connect to the internet to check email when im parked in the car doing absolutely nothing else...
but again, it's not for everybody. it's just a way to bring some very awesome computer features (not having stacks of cds/dvds in your car, having realtime gps and not having to read printed mapquest maps, having the ability to work in your car if necessary (school work, etc)...
As for my tablet setup, using RoadRunner as my frontend, it's not that difficult to drive or a pain to navigate... I have a preset playlist of a ton of songs (like 900) that i play and thats it. Switching to the next song is no different than pushing the button on the radio... really not that difficult... searching for songs however does involve concentration when you're driving but i rarely do this. i just start my playlist and im on my way... it's like a huge mp3 player with more feature when you need 'em! lol
