Default shifter shaft material?

what is the shifter shaft made out of? steel or aluminum? i was wondering if instead of buying a short shifter, if i could just cut it shorter and weld it back at an angle. help is appreciated. -dustin

I bought the TRD short shifter and I cut, shortened, bent, and welded it back together. I did the same thing with the stock one.

If I am not mistaken Randode also sells a shortened stock shifter for about $60 if you don't want to hack on the stock one yourself.
