The install on an xA is the same as an xB1. I bought one off of ebay for around $20.00 and I can't say I noticed a difference between it and the Perrin one.. or the the TWM.. so..maybe thats just me, but.. if you're not into a fairly big job.. I would go for the TRD for ease of installation.
Short shifters are really easy to install in all Scion models. Got to love working on Toyota and Scion cars, they are a a dream compared to other manufacturers!
Here's a link for a great short shifter for your car:

All the short shifters for the 1st gen are basically the same. The benefit of the TRD shifter is that it comes with a complete replacement cage which means you don't need to disassemble your stock housing (easy to mess up).
Can't remember the name, but either here or clubxb, there's a guy selling short throw linkage kits. These attach at the shift linkage cables under the hood. Combined with an after-market short throw you get upwards of 70% reduction.

i love my short throw from Cravenspeed, totally adjustable, shortest throw i have come across yet, aside from adding the linkage reduction kit, which is also SWEET, you can't get much shorter. adjustable from inside the cockpit, through the shift boot.
