With these issues happening there has to be a recall for this.

Haha.. happened to my 1995 Toyota Camry... i just took it to dealership.

Or for fun... use it to your advantage when a cop pulls you over.

Haykong, please let me know if you can confirm that the solder joints are causing the problems...if so, I'll pull the cluster and re-solder the connections...I'm guessing you are referring to poor or "cold" solder joints on the circuit board on the instrument cluster?

Yesterday, all a sudden, my 2004 xB's speedometer stopped working (stuck at zero) and the handbrake light came on. I checked the handbrake switch and the brake fluid level sensor seem to be working. Does it mean that it is a cold solder problem or the instrument cluster has to be replaced?

As cars get older or when they are in corrosive environments (high humidity and heat) the electrical contacts at the various plugs and sockets in the harness can become corroded.

When the electrickery doesn't flow or flows intermittently, this can cause all kinds of problems that the cars computer will diagnose incorrectly.

I recommend disconnecting the harness that in this case connects to the speedo cluster and give both sides of the connector a light spray with WD40. Control the spray with the "straw" to make sure it doesn't stain the visible side. Re-plug the connector a few times or work it a bit to get thru the corrosion layer and it may just work again.

Just did a similar thing to my 1991 1100G motorcycle that wasn't starting. removed the connectors to the ignition unit, sprayed them up, worked them a bit and it fired up in 2 turns of the crankshaft.
Cost? already had the can - so free
How long does the fix last? - It worked for over 6 months on my daughters Fiesta which wouldn't let her do a fuel fill - then she sold it for other but likely similar reasons.

Try it!

If it's anything like a GM cluster, the stepper motors for the gauges will start to go bad and do random things like stick at '0' or go up to 20mph when you're going down the freeway, etc.

Lots of places do gauge repair and here is one that specifically lists Scions:
