Started my fiberglass project!
So i decided to make use of the storage bin in the hatch area of my xB....This is my first time glassing anything, and I have NO training in it. I have done a ton of reading and studying about it for probably about 6 months and finally decided to do it....here are some progress pics. Ill edit the thread as I go.
I just popped it out of the car and Ill take some more pics in a few minutes.

ditto that, ive been reading up on the same, and i really want to endeavor into it...pls post a how to. or pm me some quick details, there are some things id love to do...
Can I ask why you didn't spray adhere some aluminum foil over it and roll it to make it flat as possilbe, and why did you glass over the carpet? Sorry, I'm just trying to figure out why some of the things were dont, which don't promote as tight a fit. Not bad, but I'm betting you wasted about 30 bucks on mat and resin you could have saved with using some fleece and resin.
well he has to get the base first otherwise he will not have anything to use the fleece and resin on. He is doin it right and a very good job at that! Im sure his next step is to make some sub rings out of MDF and fasten it to the shell in the position he wants, then out comes the fleece and resin.

Out of all of the tutorials I have read, this is how everyone of them is done.
I already made my sub mounting rings...I made flush mount ones for that extra touch.
Resin is just "glue"...it may seem hard but it is very brittle and isn't strong. Fleece just holds shape it does not add strength. I didnt glass over the carpet, thats what the tape is for....my car is completely untouched. I don't understand how this is not a tight fit?....It really could not be any tighter. And I did use Alum foil in spots.
I am doing the EXACT same thing right now in my tc, and im also a first timer
heres a nice tutorial im using: http://chris.pfharlock.com/glass/index.htm
il take some pics of mine a bit later

Fleece does not create strength. The resin is just a glue that dries hard, it isnt strong. Fleece and resin will crack....and the fleece will soak up a lot more resin anyway. Why fight the system? Do it as it is supposed to be done...with fiberglass, it isn't that expensive.
I used this tutorial mostly

1. Chris's tutorial is decent, but he really doesn't know what he's doing in spots. Trust me, I've been glassing for some time now, professionally at that.
2. The reason that you have tape stuck t it is for one of two reasons. 1 you didn't properly foil (which is to spray glue and roll the foil on there to remove creases) or two, you didn't use a release wax on the tape. You'll never get that off of there.
3. There is no proper way to glass. I've been to 3 "schools" for it, and none of them teach the same method. Fishman teaches one, Ritop teaches another, and Installer Institute, still another.
4. You can put fleece and resin on anything you want. The initial layer is better with fleece because it dries a lot smoother and requires minimal sanding so that it fits into the recesses well, better than glass. Plus you can remove it from the vehicle and work on it outside so you acn send the customer back out with their vehicle while you work on it. It has lots of integrity when the resin is properly applied and dried. You can remove it very easily. True, I never said strength doesn't come from teh glass. Hell, I use a chopper gun in lots of the larger areas I do. It's not practical for DIY's because 99% of people don't have access to them that are browsing the net. So for the sake of anyone being able to do it, we write them up with hand laid glass mats.
I still don't understand why you glassed with teh carpet in. It's not going to be very snug fitting.

The only carpet is on the seat back....which is not removeable....I dont understand what other option I had.
Also, I don't see the difference between using fleece or laying mat. After one coat I removed it from the car, and no longer need the vehicle to complete the enclosure. Most of that tape will come off, I just really haven't had the patience to do it....the enclosure will be carpeted anyway so it does not really matter.
It is obvious that tutorial isn't the best, but it is very detailed and covers small things that many don't. I am smart enough and have enough diy knowledge to figure the rest out.

Here are a few more DIY's, several go into depth much better. I've got a friend that's working on putting another one together and I'll post it's URL once it's finished.
