Stupid light....
I wouldnt think it would turn off because the car would be in motion therefore there would have to be someone in the driver's seat. im not sure but that makes sense.
the driver side air bag will always deploy if the car is running and the conditions are met because a car would never operate without a driver behind the wheel barring any extreme stupidity. the driver being present is an assumed constant.
now, passenger side air bag on the other hand is determined by a sensor in the seat to detect weight, and the seatbelt being buckled. if you were to tamper with this system, then in the event of an accident, with a front passenger, the air bag may not deploy because it may not be aware that there is somebody there. if you have to put stuff in your front area, put it int he footwell, or buckle it in so it stays in the seat.
why do people find these things to hard to deal with? or annoying? they are safety features to protect your life. you don't want them, go buy an old POS, and pray that if you are ever in an accident, you don't spend the rest of your life disabled, paralyzed, a vegetable, or dead.

I just covered the place with electrical tape and shiny stickers I found laying around (says ZMAN) so it doesn't bother me anymore.
I also just stuck a tiny piece of tape for the driver's light.
I understand the safety features, I just remember to put a seat belt on without the little lights.

You could print something out saying whatever you want right there.
I think a Scion logo of some sort would look nice.

All it takes is a nice soft wall to drive into so I don't scratch the paint on the bumper . . .
OK So we are talking about the passenger side then that makes more sense since I ran into this a few times too. I think Drax covers it pretty will if it is heavy enough to turn on the light then you should buckle it up since you DON'T want it flying around in the car in the case of an accident. I have had a few things go sailing off the seats during fast stops which can be distracting to say the least. You can also just buckle the seat belt up and forget about it.
Yup, Drax did pretty much cover it, BUT the airbag logic circuits for both front seats are actually tied into the 'seatbelt fastened' switches.
Partly this is because of the seatbelt tensioners that fire along with the airbags, but disconnecting the seatbelt fastened wiring, or the passenger 'seat occupied' wiring can cause failure in the firing of the airbags.
If something heavy enough to light the passenger restraint light is carried, either belt it in or put it in the back seat so in an impact there is less chance of being surprised by it smacking you up side the head at 30 miles an hour...
It's not that we expect you to go right out and smack a concrete wall, but remember that grannie can't always find the brake, and when she hits the gas instead and piles into the side of your box under full acceleration, you really don't want anything heavy enough to trigger that passenger restraint light flying around inside.

just go to a junk yard and get a seat belt from another car that has the same belt buckle thing.. then take the buckle off of the belt and just stick it into the driver side buckle.. the belt with be buckled without you wearing your belt lmao.. then no more light. and it will be easily reversible so you wont have to mess with wires.
I don't know ablut Toyota but at any Ford dealership you can go to the parts department and order for free for any of their cars a seat belt extention that is about 5" long. Its suppose to be for larger people that can't reach the normal belt buckle. You can try asking at local Toyota dealer to see if they have these. Or even try going to a interior shop where they make buckles and get a small extention made and just have that plugged into the pass side buckle. but still beable to use the belt if you have a passenger in your car.
Scion/Toyota has seatbelt extenders available for free, also, but most dealers are pretty sticky about just handing them out.
Here are the rules they are supposed to follow to give out one of the free extenders:

(A simpler version is also in the Owners Manual...)
