A comprehensive strategy has been developed to preserve the benefits of air bags while minimizing the risks. Starting in 1998, the federal government allowed certain car owners to purchase an on-off switch for their air bags. Auto dealers and service outlets install the switches. Only people who fit into the following categories are eligible:

Those who cannot avoid placing rear-facing infant seats in the front seat
Those who cannot adjust their driving position to keep back at least 10 inches from the steering wheel
Those who cannot avoid situations, such as car pools, that require a child age 12 or under to ride in the front seat
Those who have a medical condition that places them at some specific risk

Mancheese, I beleive that law pertains only to the actual removalof the airbag, not having it removed in your car. From what I understand it is illegal for a dealer to sell you a car with the airbags removed, or for a professional installer to remove them without falling within those guidelines, however if you choose to remove it yourself, there is nothing mandating that you can't drive around without it actually in and working. Correct me if you know differently....but that's what I've gotten from researching & speaking w/ LAPD

But if you do get in an accident, there is a problem with your insurance, if they found out the airbag was removed and or tampering with the unit, they may revoke your policy.......I worked a bodyshop for 2 years and have seen it. I spoke with many of the adjusters on that topic....

Nice mod though, I wanted an aftermarket but airbag issue bugs, so I am going to get a BB wheel shipped to my spot. They are leather wrapped with the toyota logo....

and oh yeah they have an airbag....

I dont live in california so I can't say for sure. I suspect your vehicle wont be deemed roadworthy by the california DMV with the CEL on. If you want to drive around without an airbag the other 364 days a year, I guess thats your perogative. I think this is what they call "chlorine in the gene pool" ;)

Did you need a wheel puller, or does the wheel just come off with some tugging once the main nut is removed? I'd like to upgrade the the Scion leather steering wheel once I find a price I can't refuse...

That is the best point on this thread so far. You probably should notify your insurance company that the car is not equiped with an airbag. It might cost you a few extra dollars a month (maybe more) but better that, then to have your claim denied in the event that you are in an accident and injured.

BTW: do you want to sell your old one??? I want to try to make it into a wheel like on a lexus with wood, just cant drive while working on it!! I could help you offset the cost of your stylish mod.

Funny that most MOMO wheels I have seen do not incorporate airbags...

It's for sure not a V-AFC...as that is only for Vtec equipped vehicles...

It's most likely the ASM unit--Rev/Speed meter.

Or it could be the newer version S-AFC.

I think it looks great, and I thought about getting an aftermarket wheel, but I spoke xbboy. He said airbags saved him twice. It just made me think....I cant take it out cuz I drive too much( LA to SF once a month) to sacrifice form over function/safety on this one.
