Default Today's Arts'n'Crafts project (thumbnailed pics)(updated)

I made a shifter, on the cheap!

Trimmed off the threads, finally. It looks and feels a bit better, and is about 1.5" shorter (though the height is adjustable):

It cleaned up nice, though wasn't too bad with the threads still on:

It's made from an 18" piece of conduit that's threaded at the ends, a length of threaded rod, and some set screws. I drilled and tapped set screw holes to hold it together, cut the length of threaded rod in half, polished the conduit, and screwed it all together. I'm using a Moon-logo chrome **** and the stock boot tied up with a ziptie.

Not bad for a (literal) rainy day project.

Plus, super long shifters are hilarious. It's really heavy, and the shift throw is about a foot.

Remember, all that matters is that you like it!

Besides, it's unique...

Thanks.

Believe it or not, it's actually nice to drive with. Since it's as heavy as it is, it takes very little effort to shift.

Ultimately, I got sick of how low the stock shifter is. That, and ape-hanger shifters are more old-school-hot-rod. I'm after a hot-rod vibe, anyway.

I like the hot rod look, trim that up, polish it and it'll look fine. I love the height in the second picture.

wow, reminds me of the 10 foot tall shifter in this old 4-speed f-150 i drove in montana. was a PITA to get through the h-pattern. and the 4 gears were as folllows, forward, alittle faster, alittle more faster, and alittle bit more faster. it was slow.

Believe it or not, Toyotas are the best for learning to drive manual transmissions. After an attempt in a Chevy when I was a teenager that didn't go too great, I pretty much taught myself when I got the 4Runner I had in college. Despite the clutch fluid leak (among its other issues), it was a fantastically easy vehicle to drive.
