What happens if you accidently cut the VSS wire?
I have a 2004 Xb 5 Speed. My friend was installing the Navi for me. He cut the VSS wire by the fuse box. I told him to splice the wire from the top of the dash, but he already cut it. I don't want to park it on the street in his neighborhood and leave it there for two weeks. He left for his trip tonight so I gotta drive the car from my friend's house to my parents house and leave it there until he gets back from his trip. I can't tow it since it's slammed to the ground and I'm afraid the tow truck company will mess up my bodywork and new paint job.
Can I still drive the car with the VSS cut? Anyone knows if I will damage the car's electricals.

umm... if its cut... just splice it back together using but-connecter... dont even need to crimp them if you get the type that screw on... it'll at least you from point a-b and having the the VSS connected... even tho its a temp fix.. then when you get to a place your safe with you can do a perm fix...
but in the long run.. as long as its connected.. i dont think the splice will be a prob unless not taped/sealed back up properly and it shorts or gets wet

I'm really a noob w/cars. I don't have any connectors or know how to crimp. Sorry kinda just want to drive it to my parents and leave it for my friend to finish it up. I'm kinda hesitant to touch the car especially with any of the electricals.
He told me he cut it, and didn't even bother to look at the install write up that I got from this forum. I wasn't there, so I'm kinda at a lost.
Basically want to know if I can still drive it to my parents place without the car catching on fire. Thanks for all your replies!

Well, worst case scenario, you might pop a "Check Engine" light. You won't do any permanent damage to the car. But seriously, if you can find the cut wire, there is NO reason you can't reconnect it. It's ridiculously easy to crimp wires. Can you operate a pair of pliers? Then you can strip the wire ends. Can you rotate your fingers in a twisting motion? Then you can operate a wire nut. Go to a hardware store. Tell them you have two 18 gauge wires you need to connect. They will show you what you need. Don't be afraid! Take the bull by the horns! It's your car, show it some love!

At least it shouldn't cause a "limp home" condition where the ECU shifts to "fail safe" mode until the wire is fixed.
Should be OK for a short drive to someplace where it will be safe if you don't feel up to a temp fix.

Hey, thanks everyone for your replies. My friend is in Japan until the end of the month. AAA came by and was able to load it on a flatbed. I'm going to radio shack and get some crimping lessons. This forum rocks!
lol.. ouch.. tho.. if you have AAA.. guess its a free tow (outside whatever AAA anual fees are right?)
shouldnt be to hard to fix... at minimum electrical tape should fix it up, but to make a better connection, use crimp connectors or solder them back together.
heat shrink tube may not be a bad idea either.. if you do heat shrink tube... slide it on BEFORE you connect the 2 peices back together ;)
