Alright folks,
So prior to replacing te rear drums and shoes I had an out of round feeling. When I lifted it up (with a jack) you can feel/hear the shoes dragging when I would spin the wheel, but not evenly. It would drag then release, drag then release, showing an out of round condition. I was just one spot and it was on both left and right sides.

Off came the old stuff and on went the new stuff (shoes and drums). After I got all of that installed/adjusted, I took it out for a test drive. Though the out of round sensation was less it still had that out of round feeling. Since then I put on about 200 miles and now the out or round condition is worse. So I'm at a loss for ideas here.

Did I miss something ? I know I installed it correctly. Anyone got some ideas on something I missed or overlooked ?

Bad wheel bearing(s), out of balance wheel and tire...could be any number of things.

 

In my case, I went to a shop to put in an alignment shim and they bent the hell out of the drum backing plate trying to remove the rear wheel bearing. Now the drums rub because of the misalignment and I have a new repair to do to correct what they did. Hope this helps.

 

What brand were the new drums and shoes? Had bad luck with Centric.
Any grooves in the backing plate where the shoes touch and you are supposed to grease them?
How many clicks on the handbrake before they engage?

 

Wheel bearings are good, no growling noise. They turn smoothly. Just drove it on the freeway yesterday and they are in balance.

 

I think I purchased AC Delco and the handbrake probably engages around half way.

As for grooves in the backing plate, I am definitely suspecting that now since you mentioned it. I had recently replaced the right side because I thought it could've gotten become bent or tweaked. Now I notice the brake shoes are centering themselves and are not dragging or feeling out of round. The left side is a different story the brake shoes are not centering themselves, which leads me to believe your groove theory. I will do the R&R and let you know if that solves the problem.

Yep I suspect that is what's catching the shoes, and it completely makes sense. Thanks for the vid.

 

So I checked out the backing plate and there were no grooves. It was smooth. Not even a little notch. The vid you posted, man that thing was really grooved. I did add a little grease where the shoes make contact with the backing plate. I'll have to test drive it to see if it still has the out of round feel. May have to replace the drums too.

 

Anyone got any details on what tubing will work for 2005 Scion Xa rear drum brakes? Car has lots of corrosion and it broke while changing brakes. Probably need fittings and all.

 

I would just purchase a new one. I'm sure they make replacements.

 

You could find a brake shop to custom bend some stainless lines for you with the right fittings or just find OEM lines, either online or at your local Toyota dealer, and go that route...your call.

 

Get the OEM. Less headache and guaranteed to fit.

 

Any progress, or status reports to your out-of-round brake issues?
As for bent backing plates, touching the drum whilst it rotates, takes all of 3 seconds under the vehicle with a screwdriver, prybar, or your wife's spatula to bend it out. It's all made of cheese now-a-days. It's happened to me on occasions, with not just drums, but disc brakes too. Easy fix.
