Spring Installation on Scion xB
I just finished up the rear suspension in about a half hour which also included sanding and painting the drums and mounting new wheels. I cant thank you enough for writing up this how to. Ill be doing the front springs tomorrow with a buddy of mine so I hope it runs as smoothly as the rear did.
ok so i tried installing my springs tonight but the 17mm "big nut" would just spin and not loosen, i have no idea what i did wrong, its like the whole shock was spinning and there was nothing i could do about it...i think i tore the boot, is that bad, or should it be ok??? i am going to take the strut to tire kingdom tomorrow and see if they will loosen everything for me and possibly install the spring on the strut because i cant for some reason...
Lay the strut down, grab it by the tube, firmly. Use the impact wrench on a low setting. Once it comes free, the spring will likely "shoot" all of 6 inches. It is capable of launching the disc used to lock it in so watch out. And definantly have a second person when reinstalling it.
The boot will try to spin on reinstall. I tore my boot this way. It's fine, just has a nice hole punched through it from where it got tangled up in the spring. Took my strut/spring combo apart about three times trying to fix it.

thats the only thing, i dont have an impact gun, those front struts kicked my butt though, i have bagged a couple trucks in my day and i have been a mini trucker for about 5 years now and never had a problem like that...i almost feel ashamed...lol...it seems like everyone else is getting it done on their own and here i am going to tire kingdom (hoping) they will do it for me...grr...
ok so i got the front finished and in the rear i followed Randodes instructions and had the name brand of the spring right side up but i am not sure if that is right, all of my "dead coils" are at the top of the spring and not the bottom...did i mess up??? let me know so i dont kill myself today...

Awesome instructions. Used them to put some nf210s on my '06 xA this past weekend. it wouldn't say it was "easy", but I'd never worked on cars before until I got my xA. The rears were no problem as I had already been back there before to install monroe sensa tracs. The fronts as expected were a different story. getting the nuts off top of the driver side strut was difficult do to a lack of space for tool work, and actually getting the first strut back into the car and attaching it back to the lower assembly was a b*tch (definitely couldn't have done it without the help of my g/f, and the 2nd front strut was easier since i knew the right angle to get it to slide back in place). I don't know about other springs, but the nf210s do not require a spring compressor to install, and I only weigh like 160. just needed to apply my body weight and keep balanced while she put the center nut on. i didn't do any before and after measuring, i just knew that I wanted the wheel gap to be even all the way around the wheel and have a smoother ride and that is exactly what I got. ill post some pics once i get my konig 16s on this weekend. thanks to everyone who particpated in this thread, your info was very helpful, and if anyone is trying to use these instructions to put some springs in an '06 xA and have any questions about how I did something, just let me know.
for anyone that had the same problem as daneisthegreatest on the front shock, loosing the top nut while it is on the car before you remove it this makes it easier. i had the same problem i tookthe shock out and i couldnt get the spring off because the strut/shock would just spin when i would try to loosen the nut. i had to put it back on the car loosen it then take off again. hope this helps someone.
also for the df210s the dead coils should be on bottom and im sure most people have it this way, although im sure it would work upside down.

thanks for the instructions.. helped out alot.. i have a friend the owns a shop out here.. so i took it to have the spring compressed to get it off the strut.. id rather play it safe.. other then that.. everything was pretty easy.. ride feels so much better now
thanks for the write-up. it made everything so simple! took me and my bro about an hour and a half for the front and about half an hour for the rear. didnt even need a spring compressor.
i got a question, when i put the 19mm bolts back into the strut assembly, i did not fee the bolt through the front like they were originally, does this matter? i did this because the way i was positioned it was easier for me to feed the bolt from the back to the front.
