215/40-17 is closer to the OEM rolling diameter than the 205. I had both, and the ride of the 215 was alot better also due to a slightly taller side profile.

NO 205/40/17 is NOT the correct tire size. 215/40/17 will get you the closest to stock. In fact it is only .07 inches taller than the stock tire. 205/40/17 will be approximately .25 inches shorter than stock. 205/45/17 is about .50 inches taller than stock and 215/45/17 is about .75 inches taller than stock.

FYI, both sizes will work on a 17 X 7.5" wheel - see specifications as follows:

Tire Size / Overall Diameter
185/60-15 23.7" Your O.E. size

205/45-17 24.2"
215/40-17 23.8"

I have 215/40/17 on my XB on a 17-7 Enkei Evo 5 wheel.
The middle number is your side wall height.

the sidewall number is a percentage of tread width. tread width is in mm. so:

185 * 60 / 100 = 111.0 mm (4.4") stock tire sidewall
205 * 45 / 100 = 92.3 mm (3.6")
215 * 40 / 100 = 86.0 mm (3.4")

the 205/45r17 is 2.2% taller than stock, so it will throw your speedometer out by 2.2% (it will read slower than stock), make all your gears run 2.2% longer, and reduce your torque to the ground by 2.2%.

215/40r17 is 0.1% taller than stock, and perfectly fits a 7.5" wide rim. (I run this size up front on my MR2, so I know it fits the rim perfectly).

guess which one is a better choice

What's the difference between 215/40/17 and 215/45/17 and which one is better?
