Default vintage wheel covers

Hi Everyone,

Love this site.
I want to purchase chrome smoothies for my wheels. Anyone know ones that both fit and are metal, not plastic?
Hubcapmike.com is good for ripple rims, which I might buy.

bluemoon,

The most handsome chrome covers I've seena are sold by Mooneyes.
They are the "spacer" model.

I'll look for a picture and I'll point out some ups/downs and fall-outs of
covers in general for ye

If metal covers like aluminum or stainless you'd paint in the usual way.
If chrome plated (like MoonEyes' "spacer" caps, then you want to use an especially
grippy paint. I -think- Krylon Fusion would stick well to chrome plate. But they don't have exactly your Camo green. The Fusion line -does- have a Hunter Green that's real dark but not metallic. It might compliment (contrast) just right with your Camo green.

Default moon caps

Thanks for everyone's response.

I'm tryng a different cap. I haven't contacted MoonEyes but they look the same as the ones from HubCapMike.com. Mike says his fit the PT Cruiser, but not the xb for some strange reason. Maybe his are not MoonEyes.

I'm hearing a lot of interest in moons now, so I want something different. I am going for the ripple rims to see how they look on my blue onyx.

I like shiny shoes. I can't stop "shoe shopping" while I'm driving! With my dark blue color I prefer chrome over alloy. My parts guys want me to go street with black wheels. "G" as my friends say. No, I am dressing Blue Moon elegant and sassy.

There is a reason people go with original Moon Eyes hub caps, they made these first, and they make them best. If you can get a set of real Moon Eyes, get them, you will not regret it.

The only ones that will fit and stay on our steel wheels are the brushed aluminum originals that are -screwed- to the face of the wheel.

Downsides: -these orinal style covers are not polished, but clear coated brush finished aluminum. A nice look but not a polished chrome look. There is no provision for airing the tire. You gotta unscrew the five or so screws to check air pressure.

The regular snap-on wheel covers that -are full polished- and are genuine MoonEyes brand are their "Spacer" model. These are spun steel, chrome plated and are gorgeous. However, they do not clear the center annular ring of the toyota steel wheel. So they cannot seat fully to the rim edge. They tend to fall off unless glued on with RTV or similar. The savage steel gripper teeth bite into the wheel paint (like all other traditional steel covers do to). The chrome plating on my buddies' set has begun to freckle with rust spots after less than six months in no-salt Florida.
-The covers, like OEM plastic covers and all other flush-fit covers, are really subject to curb scrapes.

Now, the Choppy wheels have a white powdercoat (?) finish. These can be run with or without the deeply inset chrome plated (?) or stainless (?) high-polish disks. The disks are well inset and thus protected from curb scrapes. The white lip of the rim gives a retro narrow whitewall look to the tire. The white, if scraped, will be very easy to repaint by touch up or overbrushing with any good enamel paint. Or mask and spray.

If I get these Choppy rims then I do lose the cheap, secure, super strong steelies and that is a shame. But these pups do have a unique look. As for "mooneyes being original", the chrome polished hub cap is as old as the steel automobile wheel. Early examples are found on the classic cars, albeit not full face covers.

I want the look. I want livablity. I want fitment. Mooneyes at present only offers one out of three. The Choppys, presumably are decent quality because they are JDM aftermarket stuff. I expect all three points to be offered by them. The don't really look like steelies with covers, either. They look pretty fresh and retro-unique in fact.

that's my take anyway. I am often wrong or biased, though.

cheers,
Reid

as good as these look I won't have them on my car because they required gluing-on to really be secure. Other than that, and the fact that the plating is liable to show rust spots within the year, and that they don't have quite enough crown to clear the steel wheel's center hump....well, the MoonEyes "Spacer" wheel cover is really beautiful.

I gave a set to Ray, age 91, for his birthday last May. Here he is in his car, very much in like with these covers. Still is, in fact!

Default Tread and Butter

I spoke to Mike at Hubcapmike.com, a great store and site BTW, and he said the same as Scify. He buys his smoothies from the same people as Moon Eyes and they don't fit over the centers. His site shows an xb with the rims I'm getting.

I just got my beauty today, Bleu Belle, with the TYI tailgate lights, so pretty. The sound from an IPOD makes me happy I didn't go for the front fog lights. At first I wanted to break up her massive grill, but the fog lights weren't attractive. To my surprise, my custom license plate which has her name on it, also floweres, is framed nicely by the big grill and looks for my taste even better.

My rims should be here today. Later I'll take pics and post.
Go Ray!
Peace

Show a picture or several pics if you can. If you aren't hip on photo posting we can help.

Do the covers you got clear the wheel's center OK?
If you give a link to the model name and site then I can put a stock picture up here for all to see.

thanks, have fun,

Reid
