I know the "back door handle" is not really a handle, but simply a cosmetic trim piece called the "back door garnish". I am calling it a handle in the title of this post because it seems that most people call it that, and I want to maximize the chances of a response here.

The "back door garnish" has broken twice on my 2004 xB, and I see from all the posts here that this is common. I can see why: It is very easy to grab it when opening the back door, even when trying not to. And, if the door is locked, then it is almost sure to break. Of course, I try never to do that, and I have been successful ever since the first time it broke. But then a friend tried to open the back door, and I didn't catch him in time, so now it is broken again.

I think this problem could be considered a "manufacturing defect", and thus subject to recall and free repair, hopefully with a better-engineered part.

Has anyone tried this approach with this part or any other bad part? Any knowledge on how to pursue this? Thanks.
