Default cooling fan issues

Ok.. ill try to keep this simple..

I picked up the car and drove from lancaster to long beach... About 2 hour drive.. it ran awesome... Driving in city traffic.. she began overheating..so i got back on freeway.. thinking it will cool back off..... So on freeway she got even hotter.. it shut off .. and i was able to coast to nearest offramp.. catch 2 green lights and coast to a parking spot..( lucky as hell) ... So i noticed the fan was running....i shut off the key....and the fan stopped... Turned it back on...and the fan came on... So i turned the key back off... And waited a few minutes... Then it wouldnt start back up for about 20 minutes... Then it was very hard to start and hard .. so i limped home .. the next morning..filled the radiator and started the car.i noticed the little vavle in the radiator cap was broken.... Giant clouds of smoke came from exhaust... So i began looking for a motor.. found a used one with a 90 warrenty..so i slapped it in... Runns perfect.. no codes.. or anything... The thermostat was brand new... Water pump also..... But the problem is... It was in an accident... And the repair was horrible... I mean horrible!! ... Hood fenders and grill were all crooked... Wrong radiator.... So i guess my question is....the fan should blow even with key off...right?... Would that be a cooling fan issue... Coolent sensor issue? Fan relay issue? Fuze? ... I will be ordering a temp gauge soon...

My fan has never run with the key off. I've never ran it out of coolant and overheated it though either.

Hmm.. so yea.. im pretty sure the headgasket blew when it overheated and the fan didnt cool it down... So i guess the real question is....SHOULD the fan blow with key off? Other cars ive had..the fan ran with key off...if the engine was hot... I really dont wanna blow another engine..

From your description, it wasn't the fan that caused the problem, it was lack of coolant.
