DIY: xB Sidemarker Modification

Whats up peps. This write up is a how to for keeping your front side markers on when your corner bulbs are on. The side markers will also blink when the corner light blink aswell.
Its not that difficult to do and should not take more than 1hour.

Here we go.

First off you need to find your side marker. :P

https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1434.jpg

Once you have done that you need to pop it off.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1436.jpg

To do that you need to push it foward then out.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1437.jpg

Now that you have it out you need to cut open the wire loom.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1439.jpg

Then it is time to cut the white wire.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1443.jpg

Splice open the end that is connected to the light.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1468.jpg

Now get about a 3 foot piece of wire and use a butt connector and connect it to the white wire that you spliced open and to the 3 foot piece of wire.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1469.jpg

Close up the loom using electical tape leaving the 3foot wire out.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1470.jpg

Now you are going to need a metal hanger.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1461.jpg

Open up the hanger as stright as you can.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1462.jpg

You are going to use the hanger so you can fish the wire to the engine bay.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1463.jpg

The hanger should look like this when you get it throught to the side marker opening.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1464.jpg

You are going to wrap electrical tape around the open end of the 3foot wire you have to the hanger like this.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1465.jpg

Then pull the hanger through to the engine bay.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1466.jpg

On your headlight pop out your corner bulb and harnes.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1444.jpg

Take out your bulb so that it dose not get broken your damaged.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1453.jpg

Cut open the loom that is holding the wires together.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1446.jpg

Locate the green wire with the orange stripe and splice it open.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1450.jpg

Connect the end of the wire that you pulled through to the green and orange wire.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1455.jpg

It should look like this.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1456.jpg

Wrap the wires in electrical tape so they will not get lose or damaged.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1457.jpg

Then connet your bulb back your your harness and put it back into the headlight and your done with the one side. Now do the exact same thing to the other side to finish up.

We also added chrome bulbs to the cleared headlight.
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1473.jpg

Here is the end result, the light is now on with the corner bubls.
:eyebrow:
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1472.jpg
https://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g...2/IMG_1471.jpg

I hope you like it, good luck.

Hmm... nice mod. Not sure how practical it is though... I'd imagine they still flash right?

Don't matter what anyone else says, I think it's a great write-up! Even better with the great pics!

ajayaitch 03-06-2008 06:34 AM

What's kinda cool is that if the parking lights aren't on, the side markers flash in sync with the front and rear. If they are on, they flash opposite of the front and rear.

Retrospect 03-06-2008 07:10 AM

Only because I've had problems with butt connectors coming apart due to car vibration and whatnot, I would highly reccomend soldering and heatshrinks for this type of work.

Just my $0.02.

I like that as well. Its a great mod to do.

BurxBox 03-07-2008 10:58 PM

Good write up but I would suggest using tee taps to tap int the wires. A little more secure that way. Because electrical tape comes off after a while.

Just a suggestion.

I think If you keep it amber then you should be fine. Mine are red and I got pulled over the the cop said that they should be amber.

In CA I know it is illegal.

I'm just assuming it is illegal in a few other states as well.

Front sidemarkers are legal in amber , but they can only blink with the blinkers they cannot be like a running light. as to why? ya got me.

front signals can be white or amber , rear signals can be red or amber.

so there ya guys go :)

Figured as much. CA sucks we cant do anything to our cars without it beind illegal.

Djbarista 03-21-2008 01:48 PM

YOu should definately read up your Local auto lighting laws. I found In colorado Street rods can have Purple Brake lights!
I changed my Opera color scheme as the ticket for impersonating a park ranger is less of a crime than impersonating an officer.

Objection!, being Argumentative, Sustained.
I was under the impression you could partially tint your windshield, wheres Denverites cannot. I may be mistaken. Whatever this has to do with anything Idk. :loser:

Nice job.

My concern when doing this mod and why i haven't done it yet is because those bulbs are probably not meant to be on all the time because they would generate too much heat and burn out prematurely aside from the fact that they are on ALL THE TIME. Hence the reason toyota wired them not to be constantly running. maybe for legal reasons maybe for energy conservation....who knows...who cares...we want to be cool right? I'm going to try this with 194 LED bulbs and 20ohm 25watt resistors. That way i will have peace of mind that they won't overheat or burn out...and every light on my car aside from the headlights and front turns will be LED. As complete a conversion as possible. Of course this will be after i do snowromance's Anzo LED tail brake/turn conversion with the trailer converter and add 4 luxeon bulbs all for reverse lights.

Have fun with that, I have Red LED's in my sidemarkers with no resistors, and I have yet to blow out anything. Its not alot of power going to that little 194 bulb, thats why it is ok to leave it on. And the only time it would be on is at night, unless your turn your lights on your car during the day like I do.:P Good luck and let me know how it goes.

TheCCBox 07-17-2008 04:21 PM

I know you can have your side marker lights any color because it is not a turn signal or anything like that mine is green and i drive onto a navy base all the time with them on and they dont say anything and i asked cops here in CC TX to see if it is legel to have them green they said it is not a turn so it dont matter. LOL!!!!

drbaillie 07-17-2008 04:35 PM

i drive onto a navy base all the time with them on
You should change the left (port) one out for a red one!!

TheCCBox 07-17-2008 05:45 PM

i am not in the navy and i dont wont to look retarded lol

Here in cali. its illegal to have it any color other than amber. But I have a red LED to match there rear side marker.

Zman 03-13-2009 04:58 AM

I really like this mod.

I have red 194s and they look pink, which is actually kinda cool haha.

I want to paint my side markers red like I did for my tail lights though.

I am glad you like this mod. Post up pics of the painted side markers when you do them.

This may seem like a dumb question, but where did you get the extra wire you are using?
What gauge is it?

Its cool. I just had the wire, but you can go down to your local auto zone and pick up some wire. In my opinion it dosent matter how thick the wire is, but to be safe I would go with a 18 gauge.

Okay thanks, I don't think I have any laying around though!

Clokwerck 02-05-2010 09:04 PM

I know this is an old thread, but when I did this, my rear markers and license plate lights would blink with my turn signals, what did I do wrong?

xBHAWK 02-07-2010 01:28 AM

...Crossed wires....?

When you did the wiring, did you see the wire colors that you were expecting? My 05 XB had differant color wires from what I had expected after reading the DIY. My initial connection was wrong and no lights worked. I suggest that you re-do the wiring, cross the wires for one side-marker at a time.

daneisthegreatest 02-07-2010 02:05 AM

i did this on my 06.5 last night and it all worked as planned, i am going to have to pay attention to the rear markers and license plate lights though to see if they are blinking like clokwerck's or if they arent

Zman 02-08-2010 05:24 AM

Does it look awesome with all those lights blinking?
