Default Just another horror story

So about a month ago my XB got hit on the entire passenger side. Well just to start after i got my insurance check my buddy told me to go to the shop where his father worked, which happend to be macco , So i go and i get it looked at they give me a price and i go with it. My buddy said his dad will paint the car and do the body work so i was cool with that since his dad is an awesome painter. So after a few weeks go by i call and they say i can pick it up at the end of the week and every week i call to pick it up they say give them a few more days. So all in all they keep it for a month. On top of keeping it for a month there are drips in the clear on the side skirt oh and did i forget the mention the color?! not even close my fellow scioners. Anyone who knows anything about painting knows to pull the color code right? and anyone who knows anything about scions know that black sand pearl isnt black right? its like a dark gray almost....well.....they sure didnt...so the side of my car got sprayed black...just plain old black...no flake nothing...it wasnt even BLENDED!!!!! so these DIMWITS go and buff my car...well... thats a no-no...all of the new paint is now spiderwebbed. And they said they were going to detail it?! nahhhhhhhhhhhhh never happened all of the 3m compound they buffed the car with...is now STUCK to my car because it was never cleaned off...and they didnt even have the DAMN decency to vacuum out my car...so when you go and smack the seat it looks like you just been antiqued! and to TOP off my INCREDIBLE paint job there is dirt.....DIRT STUCK ALL OVVVEEEEERRRRRR the car and that not counting the countless pounds of overspary everywhere else....so turns out my buddys dad didnt paint the car because his wife took a turn for the worse with cancer so he says he will be the only one touching my car and macco says they will pay for all of the repairs.... Bottom line is please people....go to people who know what the hell they are doing because this is buuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllllllllllllll...well hopefully i wont have to post another one of these after i get this mess taken care of....but probably will.

Man that sucks, I don't think I'd have Maaco paint my lawnmower.

Yeah, a buddy of mine had Maaco do his '67 Camaro once. He even paid their big price where they are supposed to do extra work to it. Well, they not only painted it the wrong color (light blue instead of dark blue), but it had orange peel in several places and A HAIR in the paint on top of one of the fenders.

Not only that, but his brother's car was in at about the same time. The paint was okay that time (not great though) and when he picked it up they informed him that he had a TRACTION PROBLEM in his Cougar (a '71 if I remember right). They told him that he had lots of rear axle hop and that he should install traction bars or something like that. Now, how would a PAINT SHOP know that? Yeah, he pitched a FIT!

Never met a Maaco I liked.

I had a similar problem when I shaved my wiper. The body shop guy warned me that BSP would be a hard color to match perfectly. He also said that no custom paint he applied would match 100% with the "robot paint" from the factory.

That's why they have to paint entire panels, not small sections, to hide the difference.

In your case, it sounds like a real horror story, but even when you find another shop to correct it, don't expect a 100% match.

Let me guess... Maaco wasn't one of the insurance company's authorized repair centers? You had better pray that your friend's dad fixes the car right this time. You are lucky the company is even willing to let him attempt to fix it once.

I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but if things are still bad after this second attempt chances are you won't get much help from the insurance company. Especially since they have already fulfilled their obligation by sending you a check. You might be able to get some help from your own insurance company, but unless you have a local agent you are in good with that isn't very likely either. You may end up either paying a lawyer to write a letter to Maaco, or just accepting poor work and a life lesson.

Never, ever, EVER skimp when it comes to paint and body work. I learned the hard way after taking an old car to a local, insurance approved "reputable" shop. I chose them to do the work because they were giving me the best price break on repainting the entire car as opposed to trying to blend the paint. All in all I think I was going to save a couple hundred dollars. It absolutely was not worth the money I saved.

The drips in the clear can be taken care of...no problem. The color...not so easy to fix.

Yeah...that sounds really messed up. But, as someone said, never expect a 100% match...even when everything is done right.

Clear coat paints can not be blended. You must paint entire panels. No way around it...

Buffing doesn't cause the spider web. You can wet sand and buff a car a few hours after painting...depending on the type of paint used and the drying conditions (temperature/humidity).

But, most cars should not require sanding or buffing unless the painter screwed up or you want a super smooth show-car quality paint job. 99% of street cars do not need to meet that standard.

That's pretty sloppy. The compound can be removed with some elbow grease. You can try rubbing alcohol on it if water and a sponge don't work...but of course you shouldn't have to. That's their job.

Just inexcusable. You know, I've seen high school aged vocational school students do better work.

I dont know you, or anything about you -but in your defense: I'm sure you would NEVER have gone to Maaco, except that your friend's Dad was going to do the work for you....right?

"UH-OH. NEVER get Maaco!"

Getting a Scion painted at Maaco is like sleeping with fat people...people only do it if nothing else is available.

maaco? why would you take it there.. i had my car painted there a while back, not my scion my previous nissan. when i brought it in, it was a magenta color, and i didnt like it so i wanted a change. i took it in and i told them i wanted their Midnight blue which is a blackish blue..i chose a color from their color book cuz i heard they cant match for ____. but anyways, like a week later i get a call that my car is ready, i go in and guess what, i see a burgandy sentra sitting outside!!! im like wtf? i take a good look at it and its mine, they painted over the c/f hood, over the exhaust, and had some overspray on my brand new taillights. anyways i go inside very calm and the guy told me it was 500 bux..thats what i expected to pay. but anways thats when i lost it!! i screamed at him, took him outside, and showed him my pamphlet which said the car would be midnite blue..he said o ____... so i tell him, im not paying a cent till you get me new taillights, a new hood, and paint this the right color. he refused to at first, until i mentioned the BBB. so one week later i come back, i see the car with a new hood, new taillights and its finally the right color. i take a good look at the car, and i see something wrong, i take my house key and scrape the bottom part of the sideskirt..what do you know, theres purple beneath it, i do the same ot the bottom of the door, same thing, then i said maybe the didnt to the bottom, i keyed the corner of the trunk and more magenta showed...so i take a little "scapel???" they had and did it to the entire top of the trunk and showed the guy!! he's like whats wrong? im like wtf you didnt sand this down...hes like we did the first time..im like you dumb ____ how the hell do you paint a car without doing prep work. he then had to do the entire car once again, but this time i was there for the prep work. so all in all, they painted it three times...and when i go in the last and final time, the bill is now 900 dollars. im like how the hell did the price jump...he said the hood and taillights you wanted, im like know you POS you have to pay for them since you f u k e d them up..at the end of it all, i walk out of there paying nothing, and reporting them to the BBB.. all i can say is if your in cali, do not go to maaco on harbor blvd.

BSP is quite matchable as long as it is less than a year old and kept in the garage most the time. After that they need to scan it to get an exact match.
As far as the guys dad goes. I would have been in constant communication with him so this didn't happen.
