Default OEM Spoiler mounting... 3M tape or bolts?

Hi all... so got a OEM BSP spoiler with the hardware and mounting templates. Little leary of drilling holes tho if I don't have to.
Some people on SL have mounted these with 3M double sided tape (the strong stuff...)

Any experiences/pros/cons with these two approaches?

If you use the red 3M tape (heavy duty) you'll be fine. I wouldn't wanna drill any holes either.

Just make sure that the tape has 24 hours to really cure before going 100 or something. :D

IMHO, Bolting is the only way to go if you want to ensure it stays on.
I had a Spoiler I added to my '89 Corolla SR-5 Sports Coupe with double
stick tape years ago. It tore off on the freeway and has never been found.

Right now I have a huge CF Wing Spoiler on my Box and it only came
with double stick tape on the edges and 2 bolts. I went ahead and Added 2 rolls of the good stuff
3M Red Tape all over it and Added a 3rd Bolt to it.
I am Conservative and it is on so tight that Godzilla cannot Rip it off.
But, then again it is a lot larger and More Expensive than a OEM Spoiler
at $350 a pop, I can't afford to lose it.

I Recommend you Drill and Bolt it in.
If it is Good enough for the Factory it should be good enough for you.
Don't forget that Heat, Humidity, Rain and Car Washes can be a factor
on the adhesion of the tape over time.

I won't Gamble, I would Bolt it.
Just my .02 cents,

MR LUV

i would say drill it and 3m tape it. that's how the factory does it. i'm not sure that the 3m tape by itself will hold since the area that actually mounts to the car is not that big. just the two small areas on each end.

Drilling is not necessary. Neither is a curing time. I have installed a couple of OEM tails with the 3M tape and it stuck with no problems.

Make sure you clean both contacting surfaces with rubbing alcohol. Cover the intire mouting surface with the 3M tape. Eye ball where you want to mount the tail, and if your more comfortable use masking tape to mark your center. Remove red plastic and apply tail. Make sure you really lean into it and get the best contact you can. Thats it, your done.

Make sure you get the outside 3M tape from HomeDepot. They keep it in the paint section.

Make sure you clip off then file down the 2 plastic clips that come on the factory tail. Making sure you mounting surface is smooth.

- i did this for the first time at a show in MD ... and shortly after the install the owner; 100#s wet, was on the back bumper pulling on the tail and it wouldnt budge. It wasnt until then he noticed it was slightly off to the passenger side, and he couldnt get it back off to reset it. LOL

i used the cheap roll from autozone last summer and it held for about a week but the humidity brought it down...i am going to home depot soon and gonna try the better 3M stuff, hopefully it will hold to the high humidity we get down here on the gulf

Yeah I have the same conditions here in FL... everyone who has used the good 3M stuff seems to agree it works.

The 3M should do the trick for you.

Also there are 4 locations that you can tape... the two tabs and the vertical section of the tab area. You end up getting two 90 degree elbows of near full coverage... should be more than enough.

Default Easy On, Easy Off...

Not trying to thread jack, but I feel this goes Beyond whether to use tape or Bolting on the Spoiler is why I started this thread:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...234279#3234279

There are pics there showing what could happen if you go with the tape method.

Easy On Easy Off.

^^^ K ... couple things ...

The link you have provided complete with pics is for a tC ... not a xB.

In said pics you are showing a tC with a CF wing. Anyone who isnt blind can see that that wing is not factory. Hence the good possibility that the wing isnt bolted to the car. Isnt that hard to try ... couple kids grab each end and tug. Oh, and in the pics it shows that a minimal amount of tape was used. If the entire contact surface was using a quality tape like the 3M i think the kids would have given up after a couple of failed attempts.

You also dont know if the person(s) who took said wing off tC actually knew the owner OR that the owner didnt post somewhere that his wing was just held on with tape. Making the owner an easy target.

i believe that the poster said he/she would like to install an OEM tail which will blend just nicely.

I have news for you, i can garantee that if i wanted a tail bad enough off an xB ... i could get it, bolted on or not. Our sheet metal is some of the thinest made.

And this particular thread is just that .. wiether the poster should/can use tape instead of drilling into his sheet metal. Again not being blind it looks to me as if this thread has stayed the course and not gone off topic.

CBSIMONSEZ:
"The link you have provided complete with pics is for a tC ... not a xB"

A couple of things for you.
I started a separate thread: Potential Ease of Theft. Warning, that if you tape instead of
Drilling and Bolting Accessories on that it can be Easily Removed.

Where in this thread you stated:
"-i did this for the first time at a show in MD ... and shortly after the install the owner; 100#s wet, was on the back bumper pulling on the tail and it wouldnt budge. It wasnt until then he noticed it was slightly off to the passenger side, and he couldnt get it back off to reset it. LOL"

Not True. Anyone using the Proper Method can Undo your OEM taped on xB Spoiler held on with I estimate 3-4 sq. inches of tape instead of Bolts on each end in about 2 minutes. Where as if you Drill and Bolt it in it would be More Difficult and Less Inviting for a Thief.
Most Thieves are amateurs and work on Quick Opportunities. They Go the Path of Least Resistance. They will take a Pass on spending the extra time to Remove the Bolted item and Go after the taped on item.

On the pics of the tC Spoiler, I did not post the pics on the tC Spoiler incident. If you recall, a woman Poster provided her own pics on what happen to her 2 nights earlier AFTER I posted my warning. I don't have pics of stolen xB Spoilers to show you.

CBSIMONSEZ:
"I have news for you, i can garantee that if i wanted a tail bad enough off an xB ... i could get it, bolted on or not. Our sheet metal is some of the thinest made."
Maybe, you can take off a OEM Spoiler that is Bolted On. But, not less than 1-2 minutes I can Remove your tape.
I Trust Bolts over tape anytime.
Also, If you attempt to take off my Special Custom Spoiler, I can Guarantee a few Surprises for you.

CBSIMONSEZ:
And this particular thread is just that .. wiether the poster should/can use tape instead of drilling into his sheet metal.
Again not being blind it looks to me as if this thread has stayed the course and not gone off topic ."

My Original Replies Did Stay on Topic course.
I Still Recommending Drilling and using Bolts like the Factory/Dealer Install instead of the tape method you recommend.

The OP said:
"Any experiences/pros/cons with these two approaches?"

The possibility of Theft now has it's own separate thread.

I have No Problem if you want to stick your spoiler or spoilers for other people with tape.

Wow such controversy...

Honestly I don't think anyone is going to jack my OEM xB wing around these parts. Unless I covered it with Nascar decals.

I just don't want it flying off on the highway. And I think the 3m would be sufficient, but I think I'll go the bolt route so I can try using washers to rake it ducktail-style (someone else on SL did this and looks dope as hell...)

Anyway thanks for the comments.

If I was a Thief, I can Easily Removed your Spoiler that is taped on
in less than 2 minutes Without shaking the car.
I am a Engineer with Many, Many Years of Expierence.

Do you want me to Publicly Post here how's it's Done?

Maybe, if you want to PM me, I might tell you.
If you are comfortable with the tape, then you have nothing to worry
about until you wake up with tape residue

Amazing how some people will spend $6 for a roll of tape
but, won't spend $50 for the bolt kit to properly secure a $300 Spoiler
