Default Questions on 2006 xB1 fixables: Backup Lights down..

Hi all,

After my beloved 2004 xB was T-boned in May, I'm finally ready for a "new" Gen1, and just found a 2006 xB that looks pretty good. The basics are these:
173,000 miles
Original starter, alternator, recent new clutch
Recent battery, spark plugs (compression unknown), working AC and other mechanicals

All electrical parts work - except the white backup lights, which he says recently went down. After his dealer replaced bulbs & fuses, he declined their recommendation to run a $$ diagnosis.

While the 2006 xB has some changes from 2004, the issue still must be fairly simple - either a contact near the light, off the transmission, or in a relevant harness, and a continuity test should rule out any weird wire erosion en route.
I have little free time, but am really eager to get back behind the wheel and am able to spend a couple of hours (but not five hours) on this work. Might anyone have insight into what might be the big deal (other than a greedy dealer)?

Thanks!

Here's some stuff you can check -

1. GAUGE fuse
2. Back-up light switch assembly (for manual transmission)
3. Park/neutral position switch assembly (for automatic transmission)
4. Wire harness

Thanks much for your speedy reply. Wish me luck with what I hope is not a wild goose.
