Smile Rear Hatch Handle Win!

I received in the mail today a letter from Scion, Warranty Enhancement Notification Processing Center. You should receive a notice as well.

Toyota is buckling under and repairing all cars that have a broken rear hatch handle. If you have already repaired this part, you can take the letter and proof you paid for the repair and should be reimbursed.

"it applies to the Back Door Garnish to 7 years from the date of first use with no mileage limitation or one year from the announcement of this Warranty Enhancement Program, whichever is longer."

I bought my xb 8 years ago in two weeks but I am covered for the next 52 weeks. My appointment is next Thursday. Be sure to stop by your local dealer to have the part ordered several days before your appointment. The handles are color-matched to your car. They will not be painting them.

This has been a long time coming and I believe Toyota is doing this to avoid a class action suit which has been building for over 5 years.

Actually, I called the dealer yesterday and they KNEW NOTHING about the Replacement/Reimbursement program. So I called Scion Directly and this is the info I received...

The program is called: Warranty Enhancement for Rear Garnish

If you have alreay replaced/repaired the part, all you need to do is fax your receipt, repair order, and vehicle registration showing ownership and they will process a reimbursement check and mail it to you.

The fax number is 1-310-381-7756 attn: Reimbursement Dept.

If you wish to call, the number is 1.866.70.SCION or 1-866-707-2466

If your rear garnish is broken, I assume you need to call scion to have the appointment made becasue they dealers (at least in my area) have no ide that scion is repairing these things.. Apparently they extended the warranty to 7 years or 1 year from March 2013.... And the dealers haven't recieved the MEMO yet......

No such luck. My 2004's middle attachments broke years ago even though I knew about the problem and was really babying it. I created a secondary handle that attaches at the license plate screws and prevents anyone from putting pressure on the original handle.

They're still playing games, though. They "announced" the program on March 13 but I didn't get my copy of the announcement until May 25, and then it was in an envelope that looked like an advertisement.

More info about Scion *finally* deciding to do the right thing here:

It's the SRP, it makes them stronger.
Seriously, I press the button and actually wait to hear the latch open before pulling on the handle. I need to teach my wife that trick. Mine's loose, but not broken. My hatch is also stuffed and the wiper deleted, so I can imagine the nightmare I'd be in for if I took it in for the recall.

Is Scion still taking care of this problem through the dealers? The handle is broken on my '06 xB and lose on my '05 xB.

Years ago ( and several moves later ) my wife got the recall notice in the mail. I believe that it expired 1 year after the date of issue. We didnt need it as both the xBs are still doing well with the rear hatch issue.

Going from memory:
- Remove the license plate lights held in place with Phillips head screws.
- Remove the Christmas tree fasteners that hold the inner panel in place.
- Remove the inner panel. This will expose the 10mm fasteners that hold the handle in place.
- Swap the wiring for the license plate lights and the hatch release over to the new handle.
- Assemble everything in the reverse order.
- Do not over-tighten the 10mm fasteners or you will be doing everything over again.

It's been a while since I messed with mine, but that should be pretty close if you're mechanically inclined.
