I recently got bumped by a truck today and my rear side marker on the bumper didnt make it
is this a generic thing that i can pick up at autozone
or is it something that needs to be ordered

Federal laws require a rectangular red reflector. It can be generic.
It can not be round as seen in Europe.

Pick up a pair of reflectors that you like and improvise as best as you can.

 

that doesn't exactly explain the long rounded spear shaped reflector on a Nissan Maxima (that it must be rectangular to pass NHSTA regs)

 

I can not picture the Maxima, my guess is that somewhere, hidden in that long, rounded spear of a reflector is a rectangle good enough to comply with fed regs.

I am not the final word on Federal Compliance, but that is my understanding.

There is always an explaination, got a picture of that side-marker?

Also, the rear side-marker may be incorporated into the rear tail light assembly as our front side markers are in our head lights (XB). If that is the case, than the spear shaped marker is superflious.

 

Side marker is a red reflecror and also a light with a bulb. Sure you can pick up a generic one in a parts store, but it won't just fit right. The broken one was specifically designed for your car by Toyota.

If you want it to look original, you need to order one from Toyota dealer.
