Default Rust from dealer installed spoiler???

Ok, I have a 2006 xB purchased in October 2005. Today I noticed my dealer installed spoiler was extremely loose. So I went to the dealer and they opened my liftgate and pulled off 2 black stickers on the inside of it. Rust particles just rained out of the holes!!! They had drilled though the liftgate and put screws in but never covered up any of the bare metal. WTF? I was told by the dealer that they do not install spoilers that way anymore because Scion changed it. No pix yet but will have tomorrow when I go buy a digital Cam. Any info helps. did a search and have not found anything yet.

There are many posts on rust problems with the xB. As far as Scion changing how they put on the spoilers--there must be a service flash or something on this. Did they offer to do anything for you because of the problem??

Yeah they tried to deny it was rust. DUH! Bare metal = Rust. Yeah it may not be that major yet, but even surface rust turns to body rot. I really now feel that the dealer has ripped me off big time. Not only did they screw up my title permanently, a whole other story, but now i paid like $400 for someone to drill holes through my first brand new car and not put any corrosion protection at the site. I would have done it myself and right if I would have known this. After I did complain quite a bit while he was trying to screw the stripped screws even futher to keep the spoiler on for a few more days, he finally said ok we will fix it up. REMAINS TO BE SEEN. I will get pix. I am buying a digital camera tomorrow.

Looks I dont think this is "TOTALLY a SCION RUST PROBLEM". I do think it is a call for anyone who got the dealer installed spoiler though to check the quality of work they did. Seriously I am shocked at what I saw today because the thing actually looked like it was put on with double sided tape. I did realize yes they did drill and no they did not do it right. Thats why I let them do it, I did not want to drill into my baby at a week old. But if I would have done it there would not have been a problem. Any one with this dealer option please just go try to move your spoiler up and downtosee how loose it is.

Sounds like your dealer was lazy and installed the spoiler only with sheet metal screws. The spoiler comes with plastic threaded inserts and double side tape to hold it in placed. Not aware of any tape that has to be removed? Then again, I have a 04 model.

Ok as promised I do have pix. I did talk to the service department to day and they said they did notinstall the spoiler themselves. They sent it else where to have it done. Yeah they did use screws in it. I am supposed to take it back Thurs. to have them look at it and some other issues.

Yep same problem here! I bought mine 2000 miles from where I live now and I think I am past my warranty. I just looked under my wing and saw some rust. It look's like the hole was mis-drilled? F-ing dealer. The guy was not the best saleperson. He was the Scion guy I think because he was young. Oh well you live and learn. Maybe time for custom paint????

I would definetly talk to a Scion rep, let them know your dealer f'd up.

Tim_Carr, did you buy your xB in ATX? Which dealer?

It seems like it is new enough they could just treat it with some rust converter, paint, and put the threaded inserts in, maybe some silicone sealant to be safe. It's definitely fixable.

Believe it or not this is why I was wary of the spoiler.

I installed mine myself. I definitely sealed the bare metal, and it was nice to see that the Toyota instructions instructed to do the same. It makes me sick when I see the 'professionals' on Unique Whips, American Chopper, etc not seal their bare metal.

Per the Toyota instructions on the factory spoiler I received a year ago, I don't see that there would be a problem with rust unless you fail to seal the bare metal. They made some pretty serious instructions which seemed to cover all the bases. If your dealer claims that Toyota/Scion changed their installation instructions, I would strongly challenge them on that and ask to see proof. There is no double-sided tape on the factory Scion spoiler. If they used it to hold down the spoiler then they missed something. There should be four holes drilled into your tailgate. This is an OEM part, not a knockoff. Toyota does not use tape to hold spoilers in place. There is a rubber gasket to keep the spoiler from rubbing/rattling, but it does not provide anything near enough pressure to keep the spoiler in place long-term.

How was the self-install on the spoiler? Was there any way it could have gone wrong? I am curious how the side to side alignment is done.

Wow Thank you for the response's. I will go and talk to some one, I have a pretty clean xB all said and done. This has been a thorne in my side to say the least. hayalex6 no dealer here in ATX. I bought mine in Delaware. In Austin I go to Charles Maund. They are very good and take good care of me. I am going to show them this problem and see what they say.

This is what I am talking about. I can get better pic's if needed.

Self-install was not bad, just takes some guts to drill four holes into your new car. The alignment is done with a supplied template and tape measure. It could have gone wrong by slamming the dril bit through the first hole and hitting the inside of the other side of the hatch. Also, the template does not cover the width of the hatch, so you have to measure the distance between the two. I measured like eight times and put the spoiler on to check alignment like three times and fortunately I only had to cut once.

Default Rear Spoiler install with rust

I've already sent messages to tat2dude25, but thought it good for all to read what
I sent......

I installed my spoiler in my garage as per Toyotas very good instructions.
A proper install will include the use of BOTH the bolts AND the double-sided tape. The double-sided tape creates a water seal around the bolts and bolt holes to prevent possible rust.

The pictures that tat2dude25 posted show how poorly his spoiler was installed. The
drilling of those holes is absurd! NOT in the instructions. Since his dealer sent his
car to these bozos to do the install then the dealer should be held totally responsible
for doing the repair to rectify the problem. Stick to your guns!

Yes. I meant this tape was the gasket, and not the means for securing the spoiler. The gasket is important, but only for moisture reasons and not for securing the spoiler. I see enough spoilers out that are held on with tape alone, and this is not the way Toyota intended. Sorry if I mis-typed in my last response.

Thanx for the help guys. Can anyone get a copy of or point me in the right direction of these instructions. At this point if those holes were never to be drilled on the inside of the liftgate I am about ready to make them replace the whole thing. I havent even seen what was on the exterior of the liftgate under the spoiler. I am so stupid! The only reason I even had them do it is because I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in my first brand new car. Should've done it myself.

Here is a link to the install instructions (pdf)

http://www.trdsparks.com/install/08150-52860-XXinst.pdf

And you are correct - they should not have drilled all the way through the liftgate. Have them replace it, and if they do, tell them no dealer stickers are to be put on it.
