This sucks!!!!!!
i don't know if this is true all the time but my ex was driving behind a dump truck and a big chunk of rock hit her window, she contacted the owner of the truck and they paid of the window repair. not that this helps you but just keep it in mind if you spot where it comes from you might have a claim.
the driver in this case forgot to put the tarp over the top to keep stuff from falling out.

OUCH! That sucks.
I have a few very small chips in my windshield, barely noticeable... It still bugs the crap out of me tho, cuz I'm hyper OCD about my box. I know they could "fix it" but I'm skeptical. Maybe I've just never seen a good repair job before but I have seen windshields that were polished and now look wavy or chips that are "filled in" and you can still feel the chip, the filler turns yellow, etc.
Anyone have experience with repairs rather than replacement? I'd love to have the chips fixed and I'm not afraid to pay for good work. Where are the success stories, lol.
