Default $45 dealer document preparation fee?

I was charged $45 for "document preparation fee", (even though I paid in full)

How much did everyone pay for Doc Fee?

From shopping in Maryland and Virginia, the only difference in prices from different dealers was the documentation fee. In Virginia it was $200 to $300. (Mostly that's because it's a suburb of DC--everything's more expen$ive.) So I went to Scion of Waldorf in Southern Maryland, and it was about $50. (Guess where I bought my xA? )

Its 100% the dealer screwing you but there is nothing we can do. I had to pay like 250 doc fee and no matter how much I protested they wouldnt remove it. On other cars I have bought I naver pay that fee but Toyota would not remove it. Its their over the pure price pure profit they are making.

They pay their people, there is no extra fee to prepare any documents. Its pure bs.

Ohwell.

I think I paid something like that too. I had to pay $400 for four years of registration in NJ, even though I was moving to Florida a week later...that sucked! (That's Jersey's wonderful new law, you pay for four years of registration four years in advance and even if you get rid of the car you are still out of the money...That is just another reason I moved the hell out!)

Default $45

Update: I called the DMV, "the max dealerships can charge is $45 in Cali for the document preparation fee."

Here is the list that I paid:
Vehicle Price: $15,315.00 (w/ $120 floormats)
Sales Tax(CA): $1,190.40
License Fees: $158.00 (1 yr)
CA Tire Fees: $8.75
Document Preparation Fee: $45.00

Now it's totally up to the dealers to add/remove that Doc Fee.
Has anyone tried to have it removed?

Mine was $35.00 not only for the Box but every time I've bought a car in WA state it's been that. I'm not sure but, in WA state, at least due to the amount of paperwork that goes into selling the car, transferring ownership, etc. I think that the state allows for a fee to be applied to cover time the expense. In a lot of cases business owners are allowed to charge for paperwork that involves federal, state and local government paperwork. Other fees, i.e. tire tax, battery tax, are usually the result of some environmental legislation to cover the costs of cleanup.

2006 Automatic xB
15,195.00 (includes destination fee of $515)
$939.84 Sales tax
$7.50 Tire tax (NJ thks Gov.McGreevey)
$242.00 Registration Fee(4 yrs)
$135 Doc Fee($70 Clerical fee, $35Admin.fee, $30 Doc.delivery service)
$469 Security/Keyless entry

$16,988.34 out the door.

By the way, on my yellow order sheet the Doc Fee is pre-printed at $135. There is no changing it with the breakdown as listed above. They file for the license plates and when I go in to pick them up they will install for me.

I also received Lifetime Free Oil Changes because I had to wait an unusally long time for the paper work and they didn't have the wheel covers I wanted and had to order. Oh and I got 4 keychains

Some states regulate the amount or the way a document fee is charged. With Scion's Pure Pricing, the document fee must be disclosed on the dealer's pricing menu, and is not negotiable, just like the price of the car.
