Default 122mph...... then BUSTED!

Well as of this past friday.... i'm
I was driving down rt66 in Northern Va heading my way down to Virginia Tech. I was in a small group of cars (the only group for the next mile and a half) when i got tired of going 70mph so i decided to just speed up a little to get past these grannies, and enjoy the open road. So i start to get on it and as i start knocking off the MPHs i get to somewhere around 90mph. Thinking to myself "hey lets pusher a lil while theres no one around, to see what shes got... My trusty Radar detector which can read over a mile for cop should keep me safe!" ERRR WRONG! Well all I remember is looking down and to my amazment, here I am, burried the Speedo... YES!! I was resting in the spot where (if the gauge kept going) would be 122MPH and then BEEP! then "oh !"

Normally my radar detector can "spot" an officer 30sec @80mph ahead of time.... i had about 5 sec of warning....

So the ticket was written out for 108 in 65 and because of my age (yeah right) he didnt take me to jail..... but jail time is still in the very near future if i dont find a good lawyer. I'm going to lose my licence, (there goes the plan of going back to school) going to have probation, and yeah..... gunna suck.

Moral, yes the box can go faster than most think.... but dont try it. I got busted even tho i thought i wouldnt. I acted foolish. Yes it was an open road, yes it was straighter than an arrow...... but still, it's not worth the risk... now i'm paying, and paying big time.

If anyone knows any good lawyers, i could really use one right now.

Wow didn't realize our boxes could go that fast. Now you know why most city cops don't like the highway patrol.

Funny thing though, when they're in the grind, they expect city cops to stop and help them, but when they pull us over, they very rarely let you go w/ a warning and usually cite us.

Hmm, do they use aircraft also to patrol the free/highways in VA? The CHP use fixed wing aircraft out here on the busy, ie, fastest, portions of the freeway.

There are also varying degrees of the maximum speed law here in CA, that will get your license automatically suspended and your vehicle impounded.

Good luck in court, I hope you win.

Get a picture of your box and take it to court and say "Do you really believe this squatty box can go that fast?". I love xB's so don't think I'm bashing them by calling them squatty, it's just something to win the judge over with ^_^

I dunno if that'll work. That cop was a friend opf mine. He mentioned that he caught an xB flying down there so I showed him this thread. Then he said he'd use it in court, if need be. Ooops

Just kiddin, but I think you know what I'm trying to say,,

Oh my god, that was probably the meanest thing I've ever read.

I drive on 66 everyday... and I usually go around 70mph... but man... I can't imagine 122mph. Actually, I can. I've gone a lot faster than that, but I'm a reformed ricer now. At that speed, you're just waiting to die...

How much money do you have? I have a friend in Potomac that got cited for street racing / chirping tires / reckless driving.... and he got off without any points. I could ask him who his lawyer was, b but you will most likely note able to get off your speeding ticket. If the judge sees 108 in a 65, he's going to to stick it hard. If you get off easy, you'll still be facing the maximum fine and at least 5 points.

At least you did learn your lesson... my advice to you would be to take out your radar detector and just don't exceed 70 on the open highway. Trust me, I've already been there. One of the reasons I bought the xB was to stay out of trouble. High powered sports cars are just too tempting.

Sorry to hear... You know what they say.. You gotta pay to play...

Anyways, as above... Get a good lawyer... It's worth it...

As for radar detectors, you gotta be careful... For radar, a lot of them are using a trigger style... They press the button, then it will go off.. And if he sees you barrelling down the way, he's gonna aim it at you... Laser is even harder. from the test I've seen, because the beam is so narrow, unless the officer is aiming at the detector, it won't go off... And for laser, they pretty much aim for the headlight or the license plate... It's harder to get a signal off anything else...

As above, even though I got the xB for my wife, anytime we commute, we take her car... She knows I can't go that fast in it as opposed to my car or my bike... Not that I'm complaining, since I just relax and let people pass me....

sucks for you, but what's really killing me about this thread is everyone is more interested in saying they didn't know their box's could do that... not a single mention of you having it comin' to you.

If I got passed by a xB doing 120mph+ I would have personally called you in and then stopped at the point of citation to confirm it was the car that passed me. Not trying to be an intentional ___ - but when I see people doing that, all I can hope is that they hit a bridge support and not another car.

I wonder if they'll let you pick whose innocent little 3 year old girl you kill the next time - or if they'll still just make it a totally senseless random act.

Apparently no one in the world cares for you either - good thing too since when you die, that way no one will be hurt by it.

you're a fool. suck it up and take your medicine.

Dude, lighten up... :? Open road, clear visability, worst that would happen would be to himself.

Let me quess, you shift at 2200 rpm right?

One of these days, you will be wishing that someone hit a bridge, and then they do... Heavy....

what exact correlation do shift points and doing twice the speed limit have to do with each other? And now I'm wishing that he DOES hit a bridge? Are you equally stupid? If a wreck were inevitable, which you YOU prefer he hit? The day care van full of kids or the concrete pillar and only hurting himself? -- and what makes you think I would feel guilty about someone hitting a bridge becuase of reckless driving?? What's "so "heavy" about it???? huh? What? I got a remote control device controlling his gas pedal and steering wheel now? Mr. Windowtint MADE him do it and it's MY fault now? Guilt and remorse are saved for things that ARE your fault, not sh*t OTHER people do that you had no control over. "Wishing" for something to happen (that would be less severe than the alternative) and then it DOES happen!? That's called a coincidence big guy. Not much to feel guilty about in a COINCIDENCE. That's a little omnipotent to believe your wish was granted and a death occured just becuase of you, don't you think? I don't think God values my opinion enough to take someone elses life on my behalf.

And "open road, clear visibility" has got to be the lamest excuse possible - what else? "I was running low on gas and wanted to get to an off ramp as soon as possible!"? With that defense, hell, he doesn't even need a lawyer. Just go into court and tell the judge that.

Thanks for proving my point - your reply just proves this site IS saturated with ignorant, no-driving ability 'children'. You read the first post, am perfectly ok with it ... and amazingly enough... are upset by MY post that chastises a person for endangering himself and the public at large.

And the "open road, clear visibility" crap is just that, if the road was in fact wide open and clear with perfect visibilty and 10,00% safe - he woulda seen the trooper now wouldn't he? But no... he didn't - so that alone proves at that speed, he was travelling faster than his own reaction time could allow for. The ticket would've never happened if that excuse held any water.

Even 'motoman' knows he messed up, good for him - even acknowledges so at the end of his post, this event probably saved his life somewhere down the road. But nope - it's ME that should lighten up.[/b]

122mph? That's just asking to die. Remember that when you drive, you take your life into your hands. Don't be stupid.

I agree it is stupid to do 122.
I know in my younger days I did a lot more in my '74 Charger.
Didn't make it any smarter then.

But, give him a little break, I think
he learned a lesson from this incident.

A big fine and probation should be adequate
punishment, if this is a first offense.

I hope he keeps his license and finishes school and chalks this up
to a dumb mistake.

oh I agree... in fact it's not the first post that set me (in particular) off, found it a little odd everyone was impressed the car went that fast - an no mention of how incredibly stupid it was - but - like I said - I too think he probably learned his lesson and that this event probably saved his life somewhere down the road without him even knowing it - some 'punishment' is due, but I don' tthink either that he should have his school interrupted - as last mentioned above - a big fine, some boring driving school, insurance rates are already going to rape hm now, maybe get stuck with a provisional liscence for awhile... (his actions were dumb - but not as dumb as those who defend them)

I'm impressed that they took the "122" figure hook, line, and sinker.

I have a hard time reading the stock speedo to one MPH when the needle is on the scale. Interpolating to an accuracy of 1MPH when the needle is off the scale and driving at high speed is fantastic! The driver would have to have the concentration skills of a test pilot!

The xB speedometer is known to be optomistic to start with, and most speedometers tend to be increasingly optomistic as speeds rise.

122? Not likely!

George
