It is neither a dealer nor a factory option. It is a port option. South East Toyota (SET) distribution is not owned by Toyota. It is owned by a guy named Jim Moran and he has a bunch of stuff that he adds at the port that you can't get elsewhere. Some of it is cool, and some is just plain stupid. For instance, if you buy a Tacoma and want a hitch, you're going to get a non-Toyota hitch. Same is true of sunroofs in some cars. They also install "Toyoguard" paint sealant and undercoating and charge a bunch of money for it.

The paint job is NOT done at the factory. It is done at a body shop run by SET. It is NOT covered by the original Toyota warranty, but probably is covered by SET under a seperate agreement.

cliffy is right on. Moran does offer different stuff than Toyota Motor Sales owned distributorships. The roof paint option is available in Polar White, BSP and TCM and only certain color combos are offered. They are all with the matching spoiler. I've got a pic, PM me and I can send it to ya.

Default Thanks for clearing it up!

That last description about Southeast Toyota is right on the money!

I am the Scion Manager here at Capital Scion in Chattanooga, TN, and the Southeast Region of Toyota starts about 20 miles south of me. I am part of the Cincinnati Region, but I have to put up with all of that SET crap.

I think that it is important that customers know where all of their accessories are coming from, as well as the specifics on their warranty. At my dealership, we have contracted a few other shops to do some custom work for us (leather, audio, sunroofs), but we are completely up front and they know that all of that is aftermarket.

As long as the customer is informed about the source of their items, they can make an educated decision for themselves.

I'm enjoying these discussions. They really help me provide a better experience for my customers.

Ecibus, I think David Maus has the Silver and Cherry colored one in the show room. It looks nice.

The car is actually named Boxzila. It's dragon scales like Godzilla...

Boxzila's two tone really sets it apart from the crowd (unless I'm in South Sac, where the guy who copied my style is!). I hope Scion considers offering a two tone on select colors, with silver (thundercloud) and dark colors only. I don't know about a black and white scheme... maybe with a graphic package or something, but otherwise it's just too plain.
Thanks for the kind words about the paint job- they motivate me to do even more!

Thats for the info Cliff,

Yeah, i actually saw 2 at Toyota of Orlando. I talked to some of the SA's there and they said that they do all the painting in house. So i guess it wasnt a factory option. I'm sure i saw it on the website. Sorry for the confusion everybody.

I found it. It is listed on the scion site, but it's kinda funky.

Scion.com->Build your Own Scion->Vehicle Selection

Loads up the applet with "your" Xb. Select a color then click Exterior.

Scroll down on the right side until you get to "Roof Packages". It lists the following available:
  • Polar White Roof Paint Accent w/Matching Spoiler
  • Black Sand Roof Paint Accent w/Matching Spoiler
  • Thunder Cloud Roof Paint Accent w/Matching Spoiler

All cost $924.

It doesn't explain what the option actually is and the picture doesn't change. But I think the description says something. It's either the entire roof and spoiler are painted the listed color or it's like the Saturn Ions where the roof edges are painted.

I'd lean towards the whole roof being painted though, probably starting at the top of the windows/bottom of the spoiler.
