25 MPG Help
I was actually thinking on going back to the dealer to complain....but what can I say to them.
anyone has seen this problem.
on a full tank I average 250 miles.
Thanks
Steve
I have an Auto 05 XB w/23000 miles - I average 28-29 around town, and 30-34 if I really baby it on the highway - 32 is probably average. I see some people getting 40mpg at the speeds you drive - I find it hard to believe.
Anything over 55 to 60 the mileage goes down quickly.
Have you replaced your air filter? If it is dirty this will hurt mileage. You may want to check your your spark plugs too - make sure getting good spark. Also mention to dealer. Possibly doing an emmissions test might tell if somthing is not right w/engine.
I would expect you to get at least 30 if driving 45-55 w/little stop & go. Good luck.

Check your odometer for accuracy. I read in another thread that anybody who has checked usually finds with GPS or mile markers that they under read by 4% +or - with stock tires and if you added taller tires/wheels they would under read even more makeing your MPG readings worse than they actually are. I've checked mine and it under reads and speedometer over reads.
I'm rolling on 215/35R18s which are less than 1% bigger than the stock tires. The best I've averaged on a tank was 27 MPG. That was mostly highway driving. I usually am cruising along between 70 and 80 MPH though. When merging onto the highway I usually floor it to about 6,000 rpms before shifting. In the city I cruise along between 2,000 and 3,000 RPMS. My last tank was terrible though, it was around 22 MPG, but I was due for an oil change so that probably has something to do with it. I have never seen close to the 31/34 that they claim though. I want my 30+ MPG!
it seems that there have been wildly differing claims of mileage on SL from different people.
i would be interested to know how much is the car, and how much is the driving habits.
i suggest that two people in the same area with very different claims of mpg swap cars for a tank and see what happens.
i would guess that it's primarily driving style. (for instance, i've never taken my car to 6000 rpm, and i would expect to get significantly worse mpg if i did that every time i got on the highway^^^[not that there's anything wrong with it] )

2004 Xb, Auto
Currently getting 32-33 mpg in the city.
When I horse around I can drop it to 28 mpg.
Even then I try to think about what I'm doing.
Living in Lewisville Tx, and working in Plano, its only a 12 mile drive to the office but traffic can really suck especially going through The Colony.

i have an 04 xb auto with 14,000 miles on it. and i feel lucky when i get 25 mpg. i also have 215/35R18 but its not much bigger than the stock sizes.. ive taken mine into scion, they've tested it with the diagnostic tool, and they tell me everything is fine. i drive like a grandma too. maybe anchorage sucks for gas quality or something.
If your wheels are not stock size and weight, you will have diffent MPG. The only way for a person to compare thier own xB's mileage to the listed mileage, is to do so while the vechicle is stock.
Yeah the xB seems to be really varying in gas milage based on driving style. I have been getting about 27MPG with a few mods and bigger/heavier wheels. My mother borrowed my car for about 2 tanks of gas and besides complaining about the extreme noise from the exhaust she said the gas milage was impressive. She was getting about 33-36MPG in the same vehicle. Im pretty sure the cars are just more sensitive to driving style than people are used to. With the high RPM motors in them im not suprised at all. Im still gonna drive fast. Who needs great gas milage anyway?
Big variations aren't unusual; it's just unusual for so many owners of identical cars to be comparing them like this.
One big economy killer is short trips. People who drive mostly 10-15 mile commutes will probably get lower numbers, because a bigger percentage of each trip is spent with the car not fully warmed up.
Some people don't keep a steady foot on the pedal. Constantly slowing down and accelerating, like between 55 and 70, will kill your economy. People with cruise controls, who drive mostly highway in flat terrain, should get great numbers.
Other styleistic differences have been mentioned: heavy acceleration, high-speed driving with windows open, etc., etc.
Some of the examples above, where the same xB gets different economy depending on who's driving it, are really indicative.

I ran in a couple Time-Speed-Distance rallies and the first step in the rally is to calibrate your Speedo/odomoter. I have 18" wheels with 35 series tires that result in approx the same diameter as the stock wheels. My odometer is consistently 4% under the rally masters. Now it is possible that his is too high but I believe that my Odo is slightly under reporting the number of miles I actually traveled. When I do a little algebra I arrive at mileage more in the 30 to 35 mpg range.
I just installed a Mugen Header and a FX1 cold air intake, still have stock rear pan. I nomally reset my trip very fill up. Today at a lick pass half I went 200 miles which was a shock. Like most I've been recording 260 right before the light goes on, but using the stock exhaust and air box 200 miles at half tank was well
plus the 06 is a 5spd. I'm not easy on it, So If some esle could second this finding May the true answer can be found.
I get 32 MPG in my '05 xB. My light goes on at about 260, but usually there are still around 3.5 gallons left and I usually pump out about 340 before I hit one gallon left mark. Take that into account. Also the more hills the more work it takes to get up ther so possible the move fuel spent.

Sounds like it's a few problems. Prolly bad gas (poor quality) and a math problem with the odometer. I have found you get a more accurate MPG over a few tankfulls. Instead of trying to caculate it every time.
