31 MPG??
I've had my xB for just over 1000 miles now and have had 3 refills thus far:
28.5mpg, 29.6mpg, 29.1mpg.
About 50/50 city/hwy driving. Hoping to get over 30 this next fillup!
I'm just gassed up about spending less than $30 a fillup!

I'm averaging right at 31 now. '05 5 sp. w/ 17" wheels. 1200 miles
I first got just over 30, now I'm getting almost 32. Almost all city stop-and-go driving.
I may consider placing the stock wheels back on a couple of different times to see if the wheels really do make a difference, but I doubt that they will (with 17"s, even though the wheel weighs a little more, there is less rubber for the drive-train to have to turn. This makes for a more direct connection to the road, so the drivetrain doesn't have to work so hard).....

It could be like golf - shoot your age / mpg your age.
One thing to keep in mind is the Odometer seems to be a little off either due wheel size or whatever. I was doing some time speed distance rallying and discovered I my conversion factor to match the rally master was around 3 percent. In other words by ODO was recording 3 percent fewer miles than I actually traveled.

My wife has a "nervous foot." It's easy to notice when she's driving and I'm riding. She's constantly speeding up and slowing down for no apparent reason, and she doesn't know she's doing it.
Over periods where she'd be driving our Mazda for weeks at a time, it got significantly worse mileage than when I was driving it.
I really think the individual behind the wheel has as much influence over mpg as the car itself does.

I heard somewhere that the MPG also depends on the quality of the gas itself. Different parts of the country have different kinds of gas, the "ingredients" vary depending on the time of year-- and depending on the production capacity and rate.
Could the low gas mileage people are getting be caused by "low quality" gas being produced to keep gas prices down?
I, for one, would like something to explain why our xB doesn't get the 31mpg minimum as advertised. I know it may never get 38, but how could the engine's infancy be related to MPG?

i have 5500 miles on mine and when i went to exposed i drove 1132 miles round trip with a fuel cost of 80.89 now basing that off of a 2.59 per gallon purchase price the gives me an average of 35 mpg and that was with a auto trans

If I remember correctly, the xB and xA get their best mpg at around 55-60 mph. When you get above that speed, the mpg curve takes a steep downhill. If you keep it around 60-70 you should get better mileage than if you drove around at 80+.
But if you're driving slowly, that's a different story...

It's ALL about how you drive it. I have an 05 manual with about 5,000 miles. I can get an avg. of 30 mpg with MY normal driving. I did a test on a couple of tanks that got me 33 and 34 mpg by limiting my RPMs to 3000 on each gear and only doing 60-65 on the interstate.
Since I got my xB a few weeks ago I have gotten 29 32 33 34 34 I dont know how in the hell you are getting that bad of gas milage unless you drive like an idiot. Seriously, unless you floor it everytime you take off I just see no way possible for you to get that bad of gasmilage.
Calm down and learn to take off slow, thats the key to saving gas in any car. You can go fast once your moving but take off slow.

Have 800 miles on mine and on my first longer highway trip with it (Santa Barbara > San Diego and back) I averaged 32mpg. Stock '06 xB with manual transmission, cruising ~75-80mph most of the time. Seem to be getting about the same or slightly less in city driving around town.

My Automatic has 15k mi. It now commutes 92 mi. a day climbing from sea level to 1600' elevation 2 times each day. All freeway at 70mph with 4 passengers and the A/C on for 46 of the 92 mi. Last 5 tanks all between 31-33.5mpg. I'm happy!
