Anyone think that the engine sounds unrefined and rough?
I'm at 38K miles on my xB, and the only real complaint I still have about the car is that the engine just sounds unrefined (my xB is totally stock - sans my in cabin air filter, check out my "how to" under the tech section of scionlife /plug).
Under accelleration, the sound emitted from the engine bay and under the car just sounds raspy, and gritty. Almost as if you can hear every mechanical part moving - and it only increases under harder accelleration. The 1.5l engine is just noisy by nature (evident by the timing chain chatter at idle), but what can be done to make it sound calm and/or muted under accelleration?
Note: I'm not talking about a sound that's heard in the cabin when your windows are rolled up. Here in FL, the weather in usually nice, so I drive with my windows down. I'm talking about the audible sound the drivetrain makes OUTSIDE of the vehicle, not inside. The easiest way to hear the sound your engine makes is to drive by a wall (fairly close), and the sound emitted by your engine reflects off the wall.

It's not the engine that's loud...it's the amount of sound the limited, if any, soundproofing allows into the cabin. Try getting some Dynomat & plastering your firewall.

Hmm.. my only thought is:
Have you been changing your oil often? And when was the last time it was serviced?
I'm used to cars with loud engines, but I've been around enough modern cars to know that the xB is not the quietest of the bunch.
I figure at 15K and w/ 30+ MPG, a noisey engine is worth it.
