Default Auto dimming mirror ???

Is there finally an auto dimming mirror as a factory accessory as shown in the latest Scion magazine ?? Or is it just another mis-print ??

It is a misprint i think cuz when i ask the people at the scion chat thing and they never know a part # or anything about it for the xB.

Any ways the xB's have dark rear windows so it prolly wouldnt change colors anyways...

No mis-print, got it in the xA. Even comes with a compass too!!! Just in case I don't know which way is north. "We're not lost, I know we are going the wrong way!"

I also just noticed that and the parts department at the stealership couldn't find anything. I would assume its possible but would be a pain as the only power going to the top of the xB is the dome light and I bet it runs in the pillars between the doors.

That's only offered when you get the factory cruise control.

Yes... due to the Lucas electrical it is rather buggy.

BTW.... You do know I was just kidding about the mirrors,,,,,

It's fairly easy (and a lot cheaper) to install your own auto-dimming mirror. A straight-up auto dim without a compass or temperature sensor should just be 2 or 3 wires and a windshield mount from your local auto-glass emporium.

I'm trying to decide about whether to get an auto-dimming mirror, but I've yet to find one to try. I saw a picture on the Web that showed one getting so dark it appeared only headlights could be seen. Does that really happen? I think I'd find that a bit too sci fi. How helpful is the mirror? Does it work during the day too? (I live in sunny California.)

Thanks.

Hey Calabrese, the auto dimming mirror works like a charm! I just installed one in my xB yesturday and it works GREAT!

I got the mirror CHEAP! off ebay and it was pulled from a 2001 Chevy suburban. This mirror is made by Gentex and features the Compass/Temperature Display and the Automatic Dimming Feature. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33699

If anyone is interested to get the same mirror, you can find the wiring diagram here. http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...?TID=8560&PN=1

It was a breeze to install, hardest part was to find where to mount the temp sensor. I mounted on a plastic piece behind the grill on the front bumper. ran the wires through the engine bay into the car. took off both pillar covers and ran the wires up. had to remove both sun visors and mounts and of course the stock mirror. I pulled the headliner down and ran the wires through.

If I had to do it all agin, it will take me about an hour or so to do, but as this was my first time, I took my time and spent about 5 hours on it. phew...

After the install, I had to reset the compass feature by holding down the COMP button for 3 seconds and choose my zone. VA, zone 10.

Now I have a compass in my mirror with temperature read out and auto dim

Here is a pic of it installed in my xB.

see the stock mounting location for the stock mirror?
I need to find something to cover it up. Thinking about a map light or new dome light.

I need to find something to cover up the backside of the mirror mount! looks dissgusting!

Hey Dave.

Thanks for the compliments.

As for using the stock cover? well, if you look at the stock mirror, it is attached to the mirror arm which screws into the headliner. The out side cover then snaps to the mirror mount.

I thought about cutting off the arm and just use the mount part to the headliner and snap the cover back on, but then I wanted to save the stock mirror. But I have been looking on ebay for dome lights and saw a few I liked and thought about modifying to fit. The cadilac escalades lights are looking pretty good. I will check some more and do the mod. Once I am done, I will post more pics!
